TUW: The Outpost

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Without really knowing why, Maka decides to mimic Taylar, bringing his bow down on the beetle’s back plate, not aiming at the beetle itself, but rather, at the ground beneath the beetle, causing the blow to be more effective, by using the “follow through” methodology of striking. Maka had heard of this before, when his father would tell him to aim his punches behind his opponent’s head, rather than at it. This situation called for that exact strategy.

OOC: Maka will strike the beetle, enhancing the blow by use of the THUMP technique.

[sblock=Reaction]Maka: 14(Impetus) + 22(Sequence) + 81(d100) = 117
117 - 30(armor) - 100(strike & Way) = -13
Beetle1: 20(Sequence) + 89(d100) = 109
Beetle2: 109 - 10(dazed) = 99[/sblock]
GM: Even with one slightly dazed, the beetles are able to act much more quickly than Maka, and each attempts to pinch at his legs with their mandibles.

[sblock=Attacking]Beetle1: 20(Lethality) + 18(bite) + 89(d100) = 127
Beetle2: 127 - 10(dazed) = 117
Maka: 12(Konokoro) + 10(Defense) + 81(d100) = 103
Damage: 127 - 103 = 24% * 3 = 1 - 5(deflect): ineffective[/sblock]
GM: Neither beetle is effective at biting through Maka's sheepskin pants. Maka instinctively adjusts his position to swing down with his bow as a club, aiming at the healthier of the 2 beetles while causing a rapid expansion of air around his bow as it strikes.

OOC: Unlike D&D where it is strategically advantageous to finish one opponent before moving to the next, as injury offers no combat penalty. In TUW, injury causes significant combat hindrance.

[sblock=Thump]
Range: Touch
Affect: Essence + Confluence
Effectiveness:
  • Essence + Confluence +
  • Mind + Knowledge + Will +
  • Collegiate
By actively manipulating Way, this causes a rapid expansion of air creating a loud thump in the target's ears which can inflict stunning damage (loss of Mind).
Maka: 24(effectiveness) + 81(d100) = 105
Beetle: 12(Conditioning) + 89(d100) = 101[/sblock]
[sblock=Attacking]Maka: 14(Fury) + 22(Lethality) + 23(strike) + 81(d100) = 140
Beetle: 7(Defense) + 20(Defend) + 89(d100) = 116
Damage: 140 - 116 = 24% * 10 = 2 - 2(soak) = 0[/sblock]
GM: Frustratingly, Maka is not able to generate the resounding boom for which he was hoping. His strike was also slightly off target and merely glanced off the hardened elytra.

Maka: full health

Adisakti finds Taylar's use of way intriguing, but seeing Maka's attempt fail makes him skeptical of his own ability to produce the same effect. Adisakti will strike the next beetle in the same way as the last. However this time he will use way in an attempt to thicken the air in front of his staff so that it has a widened area of impact.

[sblock=Reaction]Adisakti: 10(Impetus) + 28(Sequence) + 80(d100) = 118
118 - 36(armor) - 100(staff & Way) = -18
Beetle: 20(Sequence) + 38(d100) = 58[/sblock]
GM: Though the beetle is slower than its first reaction, it is still able to move more quickly than Adisakti and attempts to bite his leg.

[sblock=Attacking]Beetle: 20(Lethality) + 18(bite) + 38(d100) = 76
Adisakti: 19(Defense) + 80(d100) = 99[/sblock]
GM: The beetle makes a terribly clumsy attempt to reach Adisaki, as the prepared Shimadow brings his staff around for a second time. He sends vibrations along the staff as he swing, causing the air around it to push outward.

By actively manipulating Way, this causes movement of air designed to knock a target from its feet. If the effectiveness is greater than the target's cumulative Motility or Strength, whichever is greater, the target is knocked down. This does not cause damage.
Adisakti: 27(effectiveness) + 80(d100) = 107
Beetle: no resistance[/sblock]
[sblock=Attacking]Adisakti: 11(Fury) + 28(Lethality) + 22(Attack + 80(d100) = 141
Beetle: 7(Defense) + 20(Defend) + 38(d100) = 65
Damage: 141 - 65 = 76% * 20 = 15 - 2(soak) = 13
Mind: 3 - 13 = -10: unconscious
Body: 4 - 10 = -6: dead[/sblock]
GM: Not only is the beetle killed by the resounding smack, but due to its smallness when compared to a person, the pulsation of air generated by manipulating Way, throws the insect 9 strides through the air (~27').

The remaining functional beetles begin to all shuffle backward. It appears as if they have decided that this corpse is not worth all this trouble and are giving ground to the superior force.

Adisakti wasn't sure what was going to happen, but he is pleased with the result. He throws his hands in the air, lets out a loud WHOO!!!, then yells out excitedly...DID YOU GUYS SEE THAT!!! IT WENT FLYING LIKE THE TIME RAVEN'S CAT GOT KICKED BY FARMER LOU's DAIRY COW, THAT WAS AMAAAAAZING!!!

Adi runs over to where Maka is standing, stands next to him, and takes an aggressive posture at the beetles in front of him as the beetles back away.

He is so excited about the effectiveness of his way manipulation, he momentarily forgets to rib Taylar about not killing any beetles and any attempt to make him wear a beetle butt hat.

Raven Elk sees the rest of the beetles moving away from his friends. As a point of caution, he steps behind his kills to put the beetle carcasses between him and the remaining beetles.

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Maka takes aim at one of the remaining beetles, intending to shoot one of them, in the event that they change their mind; otherwise, he will let them flee.

OOC: If Maka is forced to fire, he will try to enhance his arrow using PUSH, if such a thing is possible.

GM: This is completely the opposite of what you would want to occur. You are already enhancing your shots with Projection, subconsciously. Pushing the arrows would make them tumble, not fly.

Seeing that the beetles intend to flee, Maka begins gathering the beetle carcasses together, and will assist the others in carefully cleaning them and removing the carapaces and bile sacs (if any.)

Raven Elk keeps watch on the retreating beetles as the others move and clean beetle carcasses or look for any telling details about the horse's remains.

Taylar forgets the beetles for the nuisance they were. He focuses on using Way to restore his mind.

After his pain has cleared he will examine the remains of the horse, claiming any teeth, hooves, and even small bones to see if they vibrate from Way.

He grins at the others and says, "Maybe one of these pieces can help us become as fast as horses ourselves. Think about it, we wouldn't have to ride anymore."

After they have finished and departed from the rotted horse Taylar will examine his club and say, "I'm glad we are being creative with the use of our abilities. The more we expand our horizons the larger our world becomes."
