Respen Replies And Vale Consents To Gus Going w/ Vega

Lathir -
"I have been in a city far longer than I care to be. I have a need to move on. It might as well be toward a purpose like cleansing Skorane. I am ready to leave, at this moment. I need nothing further, here."

RESPEN: : "Patience, my friend. We can be ready to leave by mid-afternoon, if not sooner. My horse is boarded and fed. My equipment appears to be ready. I shall leave now, escort Vega (and Gus, presumably) into Margull's tower, and will meet the rest of you southwest of the city at the fork of Lighthouse Street and the Gnarley Road between lunch and afternoon tea."

OOC: It is 10:30am to 11:00am now, and afternoon tea is between 3pm and 4pm.

VALE: : ~ Gus will remain safe. That is splendid! ~
Vale recalls in a moment when he first encountered Gus. He was one of a number of specially bred Dire St. Cuthbert puppies belonging to a gnome-sometimes-adventurer-sometimes-animal trainer named Pobin Wreros from the Kron Hills. The only difference between average puppies and dire St. Cuthberts was size, and that was oh-so-enough of a difference. Gus was the most adventurous and least lumbering of the lot, easily the smartest, and nearly intelligent enough to equal or best any trained animal. He might even work completely independently, were it not for his hobbit-like attention span. He had an amazing nose, but often not much of a sense of direction, finding himself in sometimes troubling and other times funny (and sometimes both at the same time) situations. Gus had found his way into the armory and was sniffing around a suit of dwarven plate armor, held in place on a suit rack awaiting the masterwork bluing. Gus had knocked it over and found himself with the chest piece wedged on to his head like a helmet. He had panicked in the moment and run headfirst into Vale, who helped him remove the chest piece and was promptly licked and tackled by the grateful Gus. It was love at first sight. Gus was more than simply a pet to Vale, and Vale had been uncomfortable both leaving him in Dyvers or taking him to Skorane. Protecting Vega accommodated both. Gus had a job, a job he would do dutifully and fiercely, and he would understand that. And he would not become fodder among the filth they were to encounter in Skorane.

He called to Gus to come to him, "Augustus! Come!" A brief pause. "AUG-US-TUS! COME!" Another brief pause. He caught the sideways glances of the others as they waited in awkward pause to hear Gus bark or otherwise approaching. Then, nearly silently, Gus appeared among them. He was not there one minute, and then there the next. Drooling and happy...

Gus let out a muffled "RUFF."

Vale, to Gus: "Playing?"

"Ruff."

Vale, looked eye to eye with Gus. "Mission."

Gus became excited, and he turned a circle in front of Vale and other party members.

Vale, taking Vega's hand gently, and placing it in front of Gus' nose, and then on his head, and shoulder, and hindquarters.

"Gus, Mission!"

"Ruff".

"Protect. Serve. Guard. Obey. Vega."

To Vega: "He's in your charge. He will do as you wish, protect you, comfort you, and lead you into mischief but out of trouble. One warning to you. He is trained enough to obey any number of a dozen and a half commands. And he is brilliant enough to work independently. However, if he encounters something new, he is going to look to you for guidance in how to respond. He does not naturally perceive threats unless it's patently obvious and you are attacked. So if you want him to prevent an attack, you need to tell him that's what is happening. Tell him to defend you. (at this, Gus' ears perk up to the use of the word). "

To Respen & the party: "It's better if he goes on his mission with you or someone else escorting Vega. He will become frustrated if he sees me leave at the same time. No need for that. "

Vale spends a few minutes explaining Gus' commands and some of his personality. He doesn't give all of it away, and saves some of his funnier behaviors for Vega to experience on her own.

To the Party: " I will hold my curiosity for Margull's 'inner sanctum' for the future. I am ready within the hour. I will attend to my horse, equipment, and belongings. "

Vega says, smiling, "Oh, don't worry, me and Gussy will get along just fine... Here, boy! Sit! Shake hands! Gooood boyyy!!" she says, as he tackles her playfully, after obeying her commands perfectly.

Without any further adieu, Vega and "Gussy" start walking down the lane, headed for the city, and eventually for Margull's tower.

Respen goes to his room and quickly collects his things, and then goes to the stables to collect his horse. He catches up with Vega and Gus, offering her a ride to Margull's, a quick view of the "inner sanctum", globe, and mirror. He scans the library for any useful times or books, as well as the book Margull was reading in Vega's recount of his departure.

He specifically tries to figure out (without spending a tremendous amount of time) where Margull may have gone.

OOC: Will roll as directed for what is seen or discovered

Respen then takes his leave of Vega and Gus, promising to return as soon as they come back into Dyvers (assuming that he makes it back in one piece). He takes his horse to the fork in the road at Lighthouse and Gnarley Road to meet the others just before tea time. He will wait if they are late.

Time you left: 10:45 am.

10 minutes to city gate.

20 minutes to Margull's tower.

Arrive at tower: 11:15 am.

Reach the top of the tower at 11;25 am.

Search roll (you should take 20, because there is ample time.)

Search time = 40 mins (finish at 12:05 pm)

Search result = 20+11 = 31 (success) = You find (3) books and (2) maps of interest, all written in the same, ancient tongue as the book on the desk.

Knowledge (Arcana) check DC 25 = 32 (Success); the mirror has runes at the top, which are in Elvish, and represent Compass Directions (N, NE, NW, E, S, SE, SW, and W) and distance in miles (1, 15, 30, 150, 250, 500, and 1,000): You determine that the forest depicted currently in the mirror is to the NW direction from Dyvers, and the 250 and 1,000 markings are both glowing.

Decipher Script check DC 25 = 27 (Success); The three books are entitled: "History of the True Vampire, by Margull The Black. VOL 1, 2, 3"; the book open on the desk is volume 4. The page to which it is opened has a picture of a brunette, female vampire with blood smeared across her lower face. The caption reads "Lynalla The Traitor." You glance at the text, and recognize the following:

"...Lynalla always thirsted for power. She sought to kill all the second generation True Vampires, in order to steal their powers, in hopes that she would then be strong enough to kill Symval himself, thus taking his powers as well, and becoming the Queen of the Damned.

Out of her three children, only one of them (Jarren) agreed to help her. The other two advised her not to anger The Originator and invite his wrath. She did not listen. Lynalla and Jarren killed Ferrindar together; Lynalla ate Ferrindar’s heart, and Jarren ate Ferrindar’s brain. To consolidate her power, Lynalla then betrayed Jarren, killing him, and draining all of his blood, and lastly, eating his heart and his brain, in order to ensure that the “powers of the strongest blood” remained entirely with her.

Xavier knew that Lynalla’s next target would be either him or Margull; more likely, it would be Xavier, since Margull had not been seen for over 200 years. Thus, Xavier created a childe to help him; he chose one of the world’s greatest generals, a warrior named Torin Von Keldermoor. It was a wise move; Xavier was, indeed, Lynalla’s next target..."

Spellcraft Check DC 25 = 25 (Success): The orb is a scrying device, as is the mirror. However, the orb must be used by two people, both of which have masterful skills in the usage of such devices. Respen surmises that a single person with enough power to use the orb alone and un-aided would need to be an Arch Mage of the highest order. Obviously, Margull falls short of that level.

The two maps of interest are old, and have mistakes (?) where the political boundaries are; or perhaps, they are really old, and the boundaries are correct, in the sense of marking where the boundaries ONCE WERE.

The first map is a map of the entire Flanaess; the second map is a close up of the Northern Regions, specifically, Blackmoor, and the Burneal Forest.

All of this information is gained quickly. It is now 12:45 pm. If you leave now, you can be back at Dewydd's manor by 1:15 pm.

Respen: What do you do?

~ Interesting. Margull a vampire? A. very. old. vampire? ~

Respen feels a chill as he puts pieces together: the bounty on undead in Skorane and the peculiar behavior in the court.

~ We are investigating something not dissimilar in Skorane. Why the hate there? Perhaps it wasn't simply a nuisance, but a genuine threat. And then this. Where did you go, Margull? ~

Respen reviews the literature and maps again, doing his best to memorize details. He spends 15 minutes extra with his own parchment and writes notes in Elvish:

Lynalla (the Traitor?)
Symval
Xavier
Torin Von Keldermoor
Margull - 200 years missing

He writes down '1000' in Draconic, as well as the words "Orb" and "Mirror" in Dwarvish.
And then in Common, "Blackmoor" and "Burneal Forest", and "250".

At the top of the page he writes 'Legends and Lore' in Common.

Should anyone read it, they would think it's a collection of useless information.
.

He rolls up the parchment and puts it away in a scroll tube. While leaving, he awkwardly hugs Vega, something not altogether odd given their time together. He has taken the opportunity to give her a better look for anything suspicious. Margull spent time alone with her. Perhaps it was a little jealousy, and perhaps it was simply self-preservation, but he wonders about Margull's influence on her.

OOC: Search 24 and Spot 18 to see or detect anything compromising about Vega...particularly fang marks and signs of charm or control.

"Vega, take care of yourself. This place is...(he looks around)...it seems to come with a...deep burden. We shall make our way to Skorane. It appears this mirror might be a shortcut; however, I think I would be careful with it. Whatever Margull is doing, I would not follow him at the moment. He gave you stewardship of these magic items; I think you should guard them carefully. Lean on Laramon should you need assistance in our absence. If you don't hear from us in 8 days, have Laramon assist you with the mirror to find us if you can. Be well. "

"Gus, you know your mission. Guard her carefully."

And then he is done, taking his leave quietly while Vega and Gus become acquainted with Margull's 'inner sanctum'. He acknowledges the guards, taking note of what they look like.
He mounts his horse, and he rides toward the south gate of Dyvers, observing more of the city, and then out of the gate toward the fork in the road south of Dyvers where Lighthouse Street and the Gnarley Road meet. He spends his time outside the gate and while waiting for others reading Laramon's books, taking mental notes from them regarding the history of the area, any relationships among nobles or landed gentry, and the general politics of the region as well. He also attempts to pick up any tidbit that would correspond with the maps or History of the True Vampire he deciphered among Margull's things.

He thinks fondly of Vega and Gus, and he hopes to see them again soon.

GM:
Respen, you are indeed correct; you could use the mirror to travel to Skorane, or more importantly, scry the site, to see if you can figure out what's going on there without having to put yourself at risk. If you're looking to get animals through the mirror, a donkey, mule, pony, riding horse, or light riding horse will fit. A draft horse, or heavy war horse will not fit. Of course, that's assuming the guards let you take animals into the tower and up the stairs, ha ha ha.

To scry on the well, you have but to concentrate in your mind about the well that Maxwell told you about. There are no checks to make, it simply happens.

As per our lunchtime conversation, you notice nothing "off" about Vega.

As Respen is riding toward the outskirts at the southern end of the city, the fact that the mirror is there nags at him. It would be a) faster, and b) would skip the trip to use the mirror to go to Skorane. Indeed, it might be possible to scry Skorane using the mirror to at least know what the landing area looks like.

~ Perhaps we could even take multiple trips. If Margull is gone, and Vega guards this item, we would be morons not to utilize it. ~

He reels in Gilda, his mare, and turns her back toward Moresby Manor, at a significant clip, and upon leaving the city proper, puts her into a full gallop back to the others. He catches them on the road, just leaving out, and tells them of the mirror.

"Margull's office presents an opportunity to both reconnoiter and enter Skorane undetected and without the several day travel. If we leave our horses, we could use Margull's magic device to see where we are going ahead of time, as well as travel to it magically and nearly instantaneously. We'd have to leave our mounts, but we might be able to come back using this device as well. I think it's worth a look. As it is, we'd be timing our arrival. This allows us to conceivably enter and leave without notice, even by sundown today. Can you come with me back to the tower, and let's try this? "

Lathir, not prone to direct involvement, speaks,
"I do not know the specific name of this particularly powerful device, but I have heard of them. In fact, I have some skill at scrying, though not at the level that a wizard would pursue, and would like to take a look at this mirror. I would even consider it to be advantageous to travel by those means even if I have to leave Angus behind. I was concerned for his well being while dealing with a threat of undead. I will gladly accompany you. Let us be about this task for we do not wish the problem to grow with our delay."

I nod my agreement. "A mirror capable to look over far distances and make travel instantaneous? Sounds fun. Question - is there a way to come back through the mirror once we are on the other side?"

"I am not expressly familiar with these devices, but it stands to reason that mirror's true owner would have some particular command word that might withdraw him from his traveled destination. Having no key words, I suspect that if we go by means of this device, our return will be necessarily mundane."
