Immortals Handbook - Godsend

This is a little off-topic, but I've worked a couple night jobs. I've found it's best to keep the same schedule even on your days off - it makes things a lot easier. I worked from 11 PM (2300) to 0700 on one job, and midnight to 0800 on the other; I'd usually get to bed around half an hour after I got off work, and get up around 2-3 PM (I found I didn't need to sleep as much working nights for some reason), which gave me 8 hours or so for writing, personal stuff, etc. I lived in a small town at the time, so I could walk down to the local convenience store (open 24 hours!) at 2 or 3 AM on a Friday/Saturday night for munchies or whatnot, which was really handy.

Seriously, UK, if your sleep schedule is thrown off by working nights, that is the best advice by far- don't change it! Ignore the day. I currently work an evening job, roughly 4-10 PM every day, and when I get off work I go to work out at a 24-hour gym and then get home about midnight (as I'm typing this I just got home about 45 minutes ago and have dinner at keyboard ready to eat). I then have dinner and get to bed around 2 AM, which works out conveniently for me because my Saturday games happen to end at 2 AM every week (so my schedule isn't thrown off by that). Waking up at 10 AM every day is no big deal, because all the businesses are open at least until the late afternoon, and I have several hours before work.

I used to work a graveyard shift job, roughly 3/4 AM to 8, and what I did then was sleep what I called a "half and half" schedule. I'd get home from work, eat breakfast, shower, and then go to bed around 10 AM- sleeping 4 hours until 2. Then I'd wake up, do stuff with my afternoon and evening, and get to bed again around 10 PM. I would then wake up again at 2 AM and get ready for work. Now, I'm well aware that that wouldn't necessarily work for everybody, but I did great on that schedule for over a year.

The key to avoiding sleep problems is not to sleep at the same time everybody else does, but to just maintain a steady sleep schedule that gives you enough rest time. Don't try to go to bed at different times on different days, that's how you get screwed up. Do it the same time every day, even if that means you lose the morning or the afternoon. You'll sleep better and have more personal time to work or do whatever.

At the moment I work 9pm-7:30am (three nights per week - or rather 3-2-3-4 nights per week - with tonight being the fourth of the '4'). I generally leave about 40 minutes before I start (I get a lift to work) and it takes me 50 minutes getting home (two bus journeys and a 15 minute uphill walk). So that means I am busy between 8pm thru 8:30am. Assuming I get to sleep by 9am, have eight hours sleep (only had 7 today, although 9 yesterday) that means I have an average of three hours in between working days - that needs to include getting ready, showering and getting something to eat. Usually I get about an hour of free time (usually spent checking messages and emails). So that means I have basically zero time when working consecutive nights.

As to the idea of keeping the same sleeping patterns all week. That would involve higher energy bills (heating and electricity), although perhaps not that much.

I go shopping once per week, go to the gym once per week and meet/go out with friends twice per week. All that takes about 1 1/2 days of time (from my 4 days off work). Leaving me about 2 1/2 days to play with. Which sounds fair enough - that should be about 20 hours work on all things Immortal. Unfortunately it doesn't quite pan out like that for one reason or another.

I think maybe I'll setup some kind of rota and timing device (to 'clock in and out') to make sure I am putting 20 hours effort per week into the books - because at the moment its honestly more like 4-5.

Ethereal does not mean incorporeal.

There are plenty of creatures that are incorporeal and not ethereal.

Spectral Strike allows you to strike Incorporeal Creatures normally.

Combined with Nescient, you can even ignore the prerequisites.

There is no relevance to being "ethereal" in 3E. You have just made the ability worthless.

First, there is relevance since I'm referencing the fact that you stated and I quote...

Your vision extends into the ethereal plane.

Given that being ethereal actually does have relevance in D&D terminology (see Libris Mortis for details) and I wasn't referring to Etheric (since I know it's an occult term), it makes little sense for a creature to be able to see ethereal creatures and be able to strike incorporeal creatures (most of which are NOT ethereal).

The ability to see ethereal creatures never gives you the ability to do something almost completely unrelated. It's also not useless to be able to see ethereal creatures since it prevents them from spying on you with impunity.

Don't take the term Etheric (an occult term) so literally in its application to D&D terminology.

Does the Nature portfolio give you plant traits or are you just vulnerable to things that affect plants?

Double Nature portfolios will give you plant traits but it isn't so clear on the single portfolio.

As written it doesn't seem to, but then I could be mistaken.

Excellent portfolio otherwise, since it goes well with the Holt Warden prestige class.

Being able to see into another dimension and prevent ethereal opponents from spying on you with impunity isn't worthless. It's actually quite valuable.

Also, 3.5 is VERY CLEAR that ethereal is NOT incorporeal.

Incorporeal vs. Ethereal
Many people confuse these two terms. Some of this confusion
revolves around the ghost, which can be both ethereal and
incorporeal, depending on whether it has manifested.
An incorporeal creature is visible but can’t affect (or be
affected by) corporeal objects, except as described above. It
still exists fully on the Material Plane, despite its inability to
interact with most objects.
An ethereal creature exists not on the Material Plane, but on

To me thats what it does anyway. But if you feel the need to further explain it then thats okay by me. :)

Nice compromise I suppose.

...I just anticipate a "So if we just want to see incorporeality on its own without the etherealness, what ECL is that?" question coming up. :p
