I don't know what Dragon Age is. However, at this point anything Green Ronin does I am at least going to take a serious look at because they are the company these days that I feel has the greatest batting average of great books.

To put it into perspective: of the licenses that are out there that a publisher could get for a Table Top RPG, I would say the strongest are:

Marvel Universe
DC Universe
Lord of the Rings (unclear where rights are)
Star Trek (unclear where rights are)
Terminator
Dark Tower/Gunslinger
Final Fantasy
Dragon Age

Are you considering Harry Potter to be license that a publisher can't get, then?

Heck, I'd think Mass Effect is a better Bioware license than Dragon Age; the only space sci-fi RPG with any traction is Star Wars, and it's not the 800-lb gorilla D&D is in fantasy RPGs.

Also, Dark Tower? Really?

As I said the list was off the top of my head.

Mass Effect? Sure

Harry Potter? Available? yes (but expensive) Viable? Not likely. I can't see a bunch of 25-45 YO guys prettending to be kids at Hogwarts.

Well said. I agree, except that I did already know what Dragon Age is. It will probably be a pretty darn big CRPG, and the TTRPG will (I think) do well for itself. Also, Green Ronin has particular flair for dark(er) fantasy, so this should be an interesting match.

It's good to see at least some commentary that is not the seemingly obligatory snideness, and even - from some what should know better, methinks - pettiness and bitchiness.

Kudos to Scott Rouse, however. As usual, he handles communications with aplomb.

Oh, and as for the products themselves, I'll probably buy both. But I'll wait and see - who knows! :)

Dragon Age itself doesn't really get me since I really haven't been following it, but this does get me excited about a possible growing relationship between GR and BioWare.

Mass Effect being one of the reasons.

Plus, as pointed out above, a 3PP getting positive publicity amongst videogamers is good for the industry.

(now if someone could score a CastleVania license, then I'll be bouncing off the walls)

Do you mean viable as in commercially viable?

I've had some good ideas on how to write a "magical school" rpg, complete with scaling things based on maturity level much like the HP books did. But you're probably right, I'd be aiming it at young adults and I don't think that even my best idea in the hands of the biggest gaming company would be commercially viable given the likely costs of obtaining the license.

Might make a good indie game for me to put together someday, though.

I think this deal could be a good thing depending on the specifics of the product. Looking at games BioWare has developed in recent years that are based on their own properties - Jade Empire and Mass Effect - what I've observed about them is that they're very good at creating settings but not so good at designing game systems and combat systems in particular.

The combat in Jade Empire was too simple, you could find an effective combination and repeat it with little risk of losing; in Mass Effect combat was a simple FPS and on top of that the system for managing your squad - which you always wanted to do because the AI was not up to it - was frustrating.

In both games what kept me interested and what made the lacklustre combat tolerable was the settings - in Mass Effect, in particular, it was the apparent research that had gone into explaining how their science-fiction setting meshed with the physical nature of the universe as we understand it that I really enjoyed. If Green Ronin can supply solid pen and paper mechanics and translate BioWare's settings into that system then I am definitely interested. That is assuming this deal can extend beyond Dragon Age, which I don't know much about beyond it appearing to be a pretty standard medieval fantasy setting, into other BioWare properties like Jade Empire and Mass Effect.

I think people fail to see what a big deal this is for Green Ronin. It is a pretty major coup for them to land this license and they are understandably excited (explains the countdown timer).
Oh, no doubt! I'm very excited for them, and I hope it brings thousands of new gamers to the tabletop. I wish them the very best, and can totally understand why they're pumped.

I'm personally disappointed, but then again I'm probably not their target market. I'm also very skeptical of countdown timers, because they are almost invariably a letdown.

QFT. This is my feeling exactly. Anything that brings about the creation of more table top diceslingers is a good thing. Green Ronin is a most awesome company indeed so anything that benefits them is likewise cool in my book.

Its just...well...this particular item doesn't interest me at all. I wish it did. I will also add to Obryn's skeptism of countdown timers a skeptism about RPG companies announcing a 'big IP'. From now on I will think 'big for someone' but not necessarily big for me.
