D&D 5E Rapiers and Rogues

I've been reading through this thread and I guess I don't understand what's 'too vague' about "you get 1 Action on your turn"?
Honestly Ruin Explorer, this seems to be nothing more than Edition Warring, especially considering your last comment (quoted above). Is Edition Warring allowed on EN Forums?​

So let's see if I can help clear this up shall we?

When you use your 1 Action to select Attack you're using/taking/selecting/choosing (they are freely interchangeable because they all refer to the same thing): 'the attack action'.
Please note that in all examples you've cited "the" in "the attack action" denotes a singular, not plural, use of "attack action". Plural use would be "an".​

You then select which form that attack action takes. You do not get to stack multiple forms of that singular expression ("the attack action") because then you're taking more than 1 Action that turn, and the rules clearly do not allow that.
Although you can add a rider to that form, such as Extra Attack or the 3rd Unarmed Strike in Flurry of Blows, because the rules clearly allow that.​

I trust this has cleared up any lingering issues with English syntax that may be troubling you Ruin Explorer.

Way I've always been ruling it is that Extra Attack means that by taking the Attack Action, you get two attacks. So if Dual Wielding were a bonus action, you'd get 3 attacks if you used your bonus action. If Dual Wielding is just "when you take an attack action, if you have a light weapon / medium weapon / the party cleric in the off hand, you may make an additional attack that deals damage (weapon, weapon + mod, or whatever they decide to roll with), then you would have three attacks + your bonus action left.

I'm hoping Bonus Actions don't turn into minor actions / swift actions 2.0. Maybe they should call it "Class Action" or something like that; so that you know it is attributed to actions that come from your class.

Note that Dual Wielding, in and of itself, doesn't grant you any attacks. It allows you to use a non-light weapon with your required light weapon during Two-Weapon Fighting. (Plus a +1 bonus to AC if you do so.)


It's Two-Weapon Fighting where the action economy is expressed, and all signs point to it too relying on the Bonus Action mechanic. (Please see the D&D Q&A article dated 20140131, since I'm not yet allowed to post links.)


My experience with D&D doesn't include an Edition that had Minor Action so I can't speak to the point of whether Bonus Action would be the same thing.
