Doom of the Savage Kings

Llore looks thoughtful then shrugs. His face breaks into a mischievous grin. "Boar, bear, wolves, spriggans, elves, bandits, you know... the usual."

The young, half-trained bard opens his mouth to say more when the near quiet of the morning is shattered by a piercing, inhuman scream just upriver from the group. Ahead, in the shallows of the river, a blue roan filly struggles against serpentine twists of water grass that wind around her legs and attempt to pull her down. The snake-like movement of the water grass is certainly unnatural.

Gratien's ears prick at the sight of the water grass strangling the filly's cannon bones. Alois and Lizt stop short and stay where they are, but Gratien edges forward, trying to get a better look.

Kurl smirks at Llore and says, "You were going to say everyday things like living, strangling grass next, right Llore?"

Boral tells Tender, "Cover me, I'm going in," and walks towards the edge of where the grass is growing, then casts Enlarge upon the foal.

Attempt to Enlarge

Tender accompanies the mage with shield and sword at the ready, but asks, "Remind me again why are we doing this?"

Boral answers in between his attempt, "Spur of the moment choice. That foal won't have long."

Kurl walks near the two, but stays back a few feet. "Still, not a bad plan. If your spell goes off that foal might damage the grass creature for us instead of our risking ourselves, and this helps us learn about a potential threat we might have to encounter later."

OOC: Boral's spell attempt is accompanied by his Tide of Ash side effect. I was wondering if he'd ever get to use it offensively: Tide of Ash: All living vegetative matter within 10 ft is reduced to ash. Vegetative creatures caught within this radius take 1d14 points of damage. Dead vegetative matter is unaffected.

Franko just shrugs at the announcement of not steeling the hammer. Wile walking about he looks all aroud at eery one and smiles at every one, waving to a few dogs and cows along the way.

Homer goes into a deep thought that continues into his walking with the party until the come to the foal in distress. That snaps him out of his revere!

Hank is showing facial conflict, but he keeps his mouth shut, for now.

Franko looks up and says, "that foal looks blue. How . . . . .strange."

Hank looks to Franko, " Uh, the foal IS blue, Franko. You are right."

Franko's eyes light with delight, "Oh joy! reality finally matches those mushrooms!"

Homer looks to the others and says, "Uh, gentlemen, let us not forget the killer blades of grass? Huh?"

Homer draws his two shortswords

Franko giggles and casts enlarge on Alois, "You look like a mighty warrior!"

Hank stands not sure what to do for now.

Alois stumbles. He'd never had magic cast on him before, and the enlarge spell made him feel ungainly on his feet. He gripped his weapon in fear, his knuckles turning pink, then gray, then white. "You're a mage?!" He spat at Franko.

Gratien eyed Boral with similar surprise, albeit less vitriol. "Just so. I wouldn't have pegged you for a spell weaver, but then again..." The Elf inclined his head in respect at Boral. Seeing that the grass was turned to ash, Gratien strode up to the blue filly. He spoke soothing words with the intent to quiet the horse.

OOC: Is there Handle Animal in this game?

Lizt stood stock still, gawping first at Boral, then at Frankie. After a few seconds, she drew her blade and marched after Gratien, Boral, and Tender.

Alois stumbles. He'd never had magic cast on him before, and the enlarge spell made him feel ungainly on his feet. He gripped his weapon in fear, his knuckles turning pink, then gray, then white. "You're a mage?!" He spat at Franko.

"Yes" says Franko in a matter of fact way.

Hee hee hee hee!

"Fun, huh?"

when he giggles, there is something . . . . off . . . . about him, almost maniacal, or out of touch. . . . . , this man in jester's clothes. he hops about like a little kid. "See, I didn't have to kill innocent people this time!"

Boral's spell works as intended. Or at least part of it does. As he casts he feels the magic flow from the filly as if it cannot get purchase. The destructive effect occurs and all the vegetation in a ten foot circle around him, including the snaking water grass, dissolves in a puff of ash.

As Gratien moves up to the young horse he notices ripples dart across the river, much like that made when a snake swims across the surface, yet there is nothing that he can see. The horse makes a tentative step towards Gratien and then shifts. In the blink of an eye a woman stands before the elf. She is young and beautiful, with long black hair and white skin so pale the blue tracery of blood vessels beneath is clearly evident. She is draped in blue silk that matches her eyes and she turns her gaze to Boral.

"You have my thanks, wizard. I am Aedre."

Though it means nothing to those who traveled here from Krivstad, the locals recognize Aedre as the name of the river.

[sblock=OOC]Yay, Tide of Ash! Happy circumstance, for once.

As an aside, I was using a definition of filly that indicates a female horse younger than four years. In this case, the horse appears closer to four years than to under one year. Sorry for any confusion.

Re: Handle Animal. Anyone can make the attempt. If your occupation is one that could reasonably be argued to include that skillset you make the check using a d20 instead of a d10.[/sblock]

Boral blushes and answers, "I... ummm... yes, it twasn't nothing... I mean, it wasn't anything ma'am. Just a very difficult and reality-bending magic spell... no effort at all... oh, that sounds like bragging... I mean to say it was a pleasure. Not that I care for pleasures. Really I'm a farmer, and don't know much about pleasures. Well, not a farmer right now really... I had a cow once..."

Kurl gives a cruel snicker and bows to the woman, "I am sorry, my lady. It would seem that you caught our young lad by surprise and damaged his brain. A good whack to the head should fix him just fine."

Tender clears his throat and glances sharply at Kurl before leaning towards Boral and gently saying, "Go on, lad. Be a proper gentleman and give the lady a bow. Then why don't you go ask her if she knows anything about the beast we hunt. Any help would be welcome."

Boral nods, but takes the advice to an extreme, stepping forward two steps before kneeling with his head bowed to Aedre. His speech improves as long as he doesn't look at her beautiful face, "My apologies for my crude manners, my lady. My companions and I seek to help all those that require aid, and so I had to act in your benefit. We are on a quest to defeat a beast that is terrorizing the poor people of the area and any guidance you may give in your wisdom would be quite welcome."

Gratien bowed low to Aedre, sweeping his arm at his waist as he dipped in respect. "My Lady of the River. Thou art Beauty and Grace incarnate." Gratien straightened. He stood slightly to the side, listening to Boral fumble. While he listened, he considered Aedre. The blueing of her skin. The ripple of water down her limbs. The sheen of dew on her brow. The deep of her hair. Truly, she was beautiful. Nearly ethereal. Gratien felt his heart stir. Here before him now was a being worthy of admiration. Worthy of his sacrifice. But surely she wouldn't have my fealty? Nay. Not the likes of her, all loveliness and nobility.

Lizt stayed where she was, well away from the river. She didn't swim well, and mistrusted water. Alois, however, bumbled forward toward the river. The large man was extra unsteady on his feet after being magically enlarged by Frankie. Alois boomed out, "How long's this gonna last?" He gestured to his overly large self, clearly uncomfortable.
