In FR, what sort of character doesn't pick some patron god, if only to avoid the WotF? What sort of loon actively denies the gods' very existence, what with them romping about Faerun every decade or so?

I'm curious, both about the OP's player's character, and about others.

My guess would be, that most have no idea of what happens in the afterlife unless they are born/raised deep into worship already. Child of a Cleric, paladin, priest, etc.

Otherwise, just like here in Earth, the utter lack of proof beyond myth is a hard bargain against not 'wasting time' in an already short life ,dedicating it to a deity granting you no powers or proof.

Now, if you in an area where a god was in avatar-form, that could be a religious awakening for the individual, but those areas are few and far between.

For me, the Wall of the Faithless is a big slap in the face towards mortals. Worship grants you a certain afterlife, which is understandable, but a being from another plane whom you don't worship probably shouldn't decide your soul's Fate for all eternity, embedded in a wall. Becoming energy and bonding with an energy plane is more reasonable.

Personally, I'd put them in something along the lines of Limbo. A rather bland featureless prairie covered in a light fog.

Some new Flaws
  1. I'm worthless and the gods think I'm a joke. Worshipping them is a waste of time - they won't help me anyway.
  2. I'm doomed to ignored by the gods. Nothing I do will make any difference. They go their way and I go mine.
  3. I'm destined to be a great hero. I'm not going to worship the gods - they should be worshipping me.
  4. Gods are just anthropomorphisms dreamt up by inadequate people. I don't need them.
  5. I don't have to worry about the gods and the afterlife because I'm going to live forever.
  6. I'm too important to worship the gods. My time is too valuable. I pay clerics to do it for me.

In my campaigns where you go when you die isn't alignment dependant. Instead it matters a great deal what pantheon controls the region.
So for example, if you die within the borders of my Roman Empire you'll end up in Hades.

A good method would be, you go into a deity's domain whose own portfolio and dogmas resemble your own the closest.

Sort of a, " you may not know me, but I know you", situation where the deity can sense any soul worth their worship, whether they did in their short meatlife span or not.
