D&D 5E Chris Perkins is polling settings on Twitter!

While I realize that lots of people were drawn to Sigil, the Factions, etc., a large part of Planescape's appeal for many people was the ability to travel between the various D&D campaign settings. Even if they plan to produce (or at least open up) Planescape eventually, I think there's some logic to the notion of not doing so until at least a handful of other settings are already out and/or open for use.

This is why I think Planescape/Spelljammer would end up being the swansong season of 5e.

EDIT: Poll update

Dark Sun 28%
Dragonlance 27%
Eberron 24%
Greyhawk 21%

The real question is will it be a propper setting guide like 300pg hardback monster or a SCAG maybe nothing will come of it and its a personal pole for personal reasons

I voted Dark Sun as there was no Planescape option. I get the feeling that omission could mean we see Planescape this year. They have been talking about an AP for higher level characters, which Planescape could be, and Planescape would also be a great way to link together the other realms. You could still set a high level adventure in the FR but have the characters quickly end up in Sigil, and then adventure from there, perhaps with consequences for the FR. New settings then branch off of the great wheel, but are all designed as part of a cohesive whole.

My other hope is that new settings get VERY different rule sets. Have Greyhawk with rules that make it run more like 1e, Dragonlance and Dark Sun like 2e and Eberron like 3e.

I would be shocked if we saw ANY 300 page campaign setting book any time within the next three to five years (unless it was for a completely new setting). Simply because usually 250 of those 300 pages is strictly story and fluff... and unless you were going to advance any of those setting's timelines, those 250 pages would be a virtual reprint of stuff you can already buy right now. But does anyone actually WANT any of the timelines of those four settings moved forward and advanced? I'm willing to bet probably not. So all WotC would need to do would be to provide an Adventurer's Guide that goes into how the 5E PC game mechanics should be adapted to the world, any new setting-specific PC mechanics then need to add in, and a basic world structure for a specific part of an of those settings in order to get the campaigns off the ground. And if any DM wanted more setting info... they could just go to DMsGuild/DnDClassics and buy the massive amounts of setting material already published and which would all be still completely valid.

My other hope is that new settings get VERY different rule sets. Have Greyhawk with rules that make it run more like 1e, Dragonlance and Dark Sun like 2e and Eberron like 3e.

What was the point of all the time spent on the DnDNext playtest then? Why even release a 5e ruleset if you're just going to throw it by the wayside because of being in another setting?

I'm okay with the different settings adding new rules here and there, like Madness in OotA, but all 5e material needs to operate off of the base 5e ruleset. Otherwise, years of our time helping the devs with our feedback was all for naught.

Voted for Dark Sun since there was no Planescape.

It was the option that was most dramatically different from 'bog-standard-fantasy'. Eberron would have been a close third for me, but I do not think it is as dramatically different as Dark Sun.

My thoughts, exactly.

Overall, that's a pretty good even split. Personally, DarkSun would be a close second to my choice of Eberron, then Dragonlance and Greyhawk.
Alas for me, Eberron is currently third..
