Mechanically, the main thing I would like to see is more variation among casters. With the exception of the warlock, every single caster class and subclass uses the "neo-Vancian" system. I want more classes that break out of that mold, which is why I'm looking forward to the psion/mystic/whatever-they're-calling-it-now.

Thematically, rune magic seems pretty cool (as long as it isn't neo-Vancian).

I'd also be happy to see the return of Book of Nine Swords classes, though I suspect they would end up as subclasses of fighter, monk, and paladin rather than stand-alones.
 



Maybe the savant could come back like a subclass of the archivist. Subclasses could be a good first step to try the return of the martial adepts.

Don't forget there are new classes by 3rd parties in the SRD of the 5th Ed.

What do you think about the sohei, like a monk with armour a ki rage from 3rd Ed?

About no-vacian spellcasters do remember they can be also enemy nPCs, while the PCs usually try save some spell for next encounters and the final boss.
 

What does the Paladin with Oath of Vengeance lack for Avenging? I played an Avenger in 4E and it seemed to be all about hitting things, chasing things and hitting them again with some holy magic: like a 5E smiting Paladin.

Relies on the gods for its defense (aka no armor) ... Hand in combat is directed by the gods themselves (wisdom based) specializing in precision (its the source of the idea of Advantage) rather than power ... a few other tid bits But yes it seems like a paladin with an unusual fighting style,
 

The main thing I would want for building an Avenger-style character using the Vengeance paladin as a chassis would be, to make greatsword attacks using Dex instead of Str. Sure, I'd have to wear studded leather armor, which is a little bit different that 4E, and I'd cast using Cha instead of Wis, and I'd have to pick a race or background that got some not-very-paladin-y skills like Acrobatics and Stealth. But those are all compromises I'm willing to make. I just can't give up that greatsword, and trying to pump both Dex and Str is very difficult on a class that also wants Cha and Con.

I wonder about how would be a reboot of Dark Sun with the seeker and the warden classes from 4th Ed. Here the primal magic would work like biopunk tech (do you remember the living machines from "eXistenZ"?).

I imagine the runes like a single-use magic item, like the potions, scrolls, talismans or psionic tattoos, and the runepriest like an artificer class with a game mechanic like the incarnum soulmelds, spending "points of mana" to load the runes, and many powers would be like temporal feats.
 

I know it's super niche but ... Totemist. An incarnum system where you decide what soulmelds to equip and then move or spend a small pool of points to increase effects to expend powers has tons of design space.

Yea, the inquisitor from Pathfinder 1 is also a good inspiration. Baseline D&D has never had a good "divine + skills" class.
