After Waterdeep what should be the next FR adventure?

No idea.

In the precedence of PotA, CoS, SGT, and ToA I would say a remash could be coming of some older module or at least the ideas. It could be Slave Lords, it could be something else.

If it's a remash, I hope it's a remash of Desert of Desolation.

Remaining within FR, my pie-in-the-sky wishlist would be:

1. Sinbad-style adventure in Zakhara
2. Kung Fu in Kara-Tur
3. Pirates in the Inner Sea
4. Vile Darkness adventure for evil PCs in Thay, with Aglarond and Rashemen as the "bad guys"

What do I think we might actually get?
1. Feywild and/or Shadowfell
2. Planar travels
3. Cormyr

And to be honest I'd be happy with any of that too.

Honestly if I was going to do a BoVD style adventure based in Thay, I'd make Mulhorand the antagonists, Rashemon and Algorand have never been the aggressors with Thay, only fought defensive wars against Thay, we're as Mulhorand under Ra and Horus-Ra, invaded Thay several times and Thay used to be a part of Mulhorand, with the Red Wizards revolting against Mulhorand. Mulhorand is ruled by mortally incarnated Gods, most of whom are neutral and good, and very expansionist in nature, with a desire to take back what was theirs, filled with Paladins and Clerics and Celestials and, so on, perfect antagonists for evil characters.

Early on I said:

I think they’ll go with pirates, pairing with the ship release in the spring.
It’s a different tone of campaign, but still iconic and desirable.

But that might be the summer adventure. I expect the spring one will be reprint heavy after the lengthy fall schedule. Maybe more updates of older editions.

Having a spring accessory makes sense given how busy the adventure team would have been with two back-to-back adventures. Making it four in a row would kill Perkins, and they're not swapping out the summer adventure: the summer adventure tends to be the big one, as that ties into minis, Neverwinter, and other product lines.

Thinking more that, I think pirates makes the most sense for the big summer adventure. Cast it as a reflavoured version of the "Slavers" series and make the PCs heroic freebooters hunting the slavers.
People love pirates and sailing, and it's supported by the boat miniature.

For the spring... who knows?
Mearls and Crawford handled Tales from the Yawning Portal without Perkins, so it's possible that we'll still get another set of reprints/ updates. But that still means four adventures in a row, which might be a long time for fans to wait for non-adventure content.

Who knows what they'll do? They've surprised us with most of the splatbooks and (most) of the adventures.

They used a lot of Adventurers league writers on Dungeon of a Mad Mage, so I think that relieved a lot of burden on Chris Perkin's shoulders.

Still I suspect the spring book will be Volo's Guide to Spirits and Specters, unless that hits maybe late Winter.

I will point out that Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica has a lot of player content, races, subclasses, backgrounds, and possibly more and it's out in Novermeber.

He was still heavily involved though. Really, I imagine the extra writers were there just so they could manage to get two adventures out in three months.
Following that with another one six months later could be doable, but might be taxing.

I hope not. That's a super narrow focus. It could be broadened to all undead and work nicely though….

Even then, that's a super odd topic to place on Volo. A book like that should probably have the "Van Richten" name.
And having two "Volo" books runs the risk of people mistaking one for the other and buying the wrong one.

Also… I kinda have enough monsters already. Even excluding Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex we have two official accessories with one released the previous year. I'm not sure there's enough amazing monsters left to fill out such a book.

Yeah, but a lot of that is also being done by James Wyatt. So the question remains what the other three members of the rules team are doing...

It's a little to worry about having more then one book with Volo's Name in the title, even before 5e there was a whole bunch.

And honestly it's too late now likely for them to back out of Volo's Guide to Spirits and Spectres, part of the work might already have been done, and the Easter Egg has already been revealed.

And I imagine that all kinds of different undead will be in the book along with other kinds of spirits. I think this will be the Religion/Deity/spiritual/undeath book, I don't even know for sure it will have monster stats in it (it likely will). I suspect we will see various Celestial creatures in it, undead especially incorporeal undead, maybe rarer types of fiends outside the big three.

Here is how I see it breaking down first 5 or 6 chapters will be lore on various creature types like in VGTM. Celestials/Good Deities, Fiends/Evil Deities, Archfey/Fey Spirits, Quasideities, then player's options chapter with spirit and undeath themed races, like Reverant, Spiritfolk, Synad, and so on, maybe some subclasses and spells as well. Then the monster section with incorpreal undead, celestial races like Guardinals and Archons, fey like Nymphs, maybe stuff like Kami, or those cute elemental spirits from ToA, and maybe some power Deity Avatars and Quasideities.

Also remember that it's Volo's Guide to SPIRITSand Spectres, and in 5e a lot of different types of beings get called spirits, from a Paladin's Steed and Familiars, to incorpereal undead, to nature spirits, and more.

An undead book would be cool, but that should detail corporeal and incoporeal undead...
I don’t think we need a half-dozen pages on wraiths and a comparable amount on specters. They don’t have a culture to expand or personalities that need explained.
Focusing just on spirits feels small for one of the 5e tent pole releases. Those tend to cover a lot of different topics.

Personally, I think they just wanted to have Volo writing a new book (because he’d always be working on the next one) and opted for one that best justified why he bought a haunted house. I don’t think it was more than an offhand reference and not some cunning Easter egg.
If they wanted to tease the next book, it would have been more vague and generate more speculation.
