Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sorcerer and Warlock

There's a new Unearthed Arcana from WotC today, hot on the heels of the recent one for barbarian and monk. "Two classes, the sorcerer and the warlock, discover new playtest possibilities this week. Okay, playing parts of 'Night Below' right now. I have not read these yet, but sounds like these could be useful. I changed the death priest from original 2E module to a warlock of the Great Old One - getting powers FROM the big bads to come. Maybe the warlock here suits even more?

Really, I was struggling to see these 4 Subclasses as fitting any traditional D&D setting, but now imagining them as Magic cards they make tonal sense.

Yeah, that does make sense.

It's like they let people from the M:tG part of the building be guest sub-class designers.

Well, these come from Dan Dillon, who was with Kobold Press untill recently. But yeah, visualizing these guys as Magic card art pieces works for me.

So, may or may not be related, but...Magic next Fall is returning to Zendikar, a Plane that's most recent metaplot involved being smashed by Titanic, Psionic Elder Evils, but is otherwise pretty D&D friendly as a setting...
The Eldrazi have left Zendikar though. Literally MaRo pitched the Fall set as “Zendikar without Eldrazi.”

They might be gone, but that would fit still with the Aberrant Mind in this article, or maybe even the Pact o' the Depths. The Barbarian and Monk, thinking back on it, really read like summons to me at the moment...

I mean, psionics makes me think Dark Sun, but this is too Lovecraftian for that.

Have to admit, this is a real head-scratcher in terms of settings. Perhaps something Planescape-y?
Eberron would fit perfectly well, if the upcoming AL season delves into the influence of Xoriat in a lovecraftian noir adventure, but we know these won’t be in Rising...
