I played a Sheppard Druid and there's not a lot of problem that can't be solved by summoning 8 wolves, or by wildshaping into something tiny and sneaking about.
I just mostly got BORED that the best moves were always the same and that once I had a concentration spell going I had very little options. Also we were often in civilized settings so a lot of my spells weren't that suited to the current situation...
So Druid is good, but like... ranked 4 good not top 3.
Yeah, but who wants to play a tree hugging hippie druid? I mean sure, wild animals follow them around everywhere but that's probably just because they need a bath.

Interesting. Usually class polls are dominated by the Big 4.
It almost was when I first looked and started considering it. Wizards only had a point over rogues and fighters, and were just behind bards (instead of clerics). Then out of the blue wizards, bards, and paladins broke away suddenly enough I wondered if some alt-voted those 3 up, lol, except I know they tend to get favor on the boards as powerful.

Very true. They're more like "Best in Tier" than best overall, though. The Paladin, in particular, easily the best of the half-casters. The Bard the best of the "known"-spell casters.
So at this point grouped by banding between sudden drops...
Top: Bard, Wizard, Paladin
Upper: Fighter, Warlock, Cleric, Rogue, Druid
Lower: Monk, Barbarian, Sorcerer
Bottom: Ranger
There's not really that many voters yet. 91 voters seems like the very definition of verbal minority (which may or may not demonstrate the real trend). ;-)
If we are going to poll, it would be nice if we could get more voters and less abstainers. I would have to give more faith to the DnD Beyond stats previously discussed as a better sampling otherwise. ;-)

I went wizard and bard for the top two without hesitation. Obviously both of these require a party with some direct damage dealers in order to realize their maximum combat potential, which is as force multipliers. But it's hard to compete with them for out-of-combat utility, and with the right party synergy, they can be combat MVPs too.
I was torn on my third pick, but ended up going with Cleric. They fall off after tier 2, but since most play happens in lower tiers, they're really strong there. Good AC, good damage output, good support, and the ability to swap out spells daily and cast rituals gives them good utility (though not on par with the wizard, bard, or rogue).

Another thing to consider is that any class poll tends to be led by the Big 4. So the Wizard being on top, not a surprise - Tier 1, Big 4. That any of the Big 4 didn't make the top is an indication they're somehow lacking.
(I wonder how much it matters that it's a Top /3/ poll? When you can't just vote all the Big 4, you have to stop and think...)
That's ENWorld all over. Also, we're old.
Those were popularity, not any sense of 'best,' though. Yeah, a lot of Beyonders roll up a Fighter named Bob at some point.
