D&D 5E so, mountain dwarf wizards...

Well plate is the highest AC you can get with just an armor, technically. Only 1 higher, but still higher. Also dex penalties don't apply to heavy armor, so anyone with an 8 in dex might like it. (And you're not likely to care about stealth rolls anyway with an 8 in dex.)

Dex 8 only gives you -1, turning an average roll of 10.5 to 9.5. Disadvantage means your average roll is 5 or so, a much greater penalty.

And I was wrong about breastplate+Dex = Full plate. Still 2 short. In 5E that seems to be significant.

I just meant if your Dex is 8 you probably don't care much about dex-based skills. A penalty is obviously worse, yes, but you were probably not trying to pass them in the first place. (And the best heavy armor is 1 AC more than the best medium armor +2 dex mod. Unless you meant it's 2 more AC than the best medium armor without a stealth penalty.)

Yes, fairly sure that's what he meant. If you're willing to accept a Stealth penalty, there's not a lot of point in wearing medium armor, at least if you're proficient in and can afford plate.

respectfully, the Original post was just about dwarf wizards being awesome. And i feel like everyone has gotten off on their tangent.

Like multiple people have posted about high lvl play... that come the higher levels you will be outmatched by the most syncronous raceclasscombo in the game...and first of all...DUh. Yes everyone knows the "I eat and pee magic" race is going to be a better wizard . 2nd of all this game is more than just high lvl play. from what i understand most players are lucky to have a single campaign last more than once session, certainly my group was that way. I myself came here looking because the local game store is doing a 1 shot game that just happens to be on a day i never have off, that i happen to have off this next week for some reason. I was hoping to see people coming up with tips to how to make it work, some of the best spells and customization options but its 50% "yea but at lvl 20 you will be like...slightly weaker "

Furthermore there seems to be a complete lack of DM awareness and player versatility awareness. Like "why go in melee when you can just sit back and hurl spells"...Well first of all at lvl 1 i get 2 first lvl spells, which means i need to save them for when we are desperate. and 2 monsters want to kill me and might enter melee range. 3rd I dont like the idea of wasting 1/2 or even 1/3 of my only real magic when i could just...wear armor...for like a 1 time payment of 20 gold or whatever?

and then there is the idea that player or DM behavior will result in having fights where you didnt get a short rest or long rest first. so it would be nice to be able to have something you can fallback on. Are we a group that rolls wizards that dont have a bow, or a dagger or something? we just sit and twiddle our thumbs when we cant cast magic for the 20 or so reasons the DMG gives DMs a way to keep you from casting magic?

cmon people instead of wasting so much time saying why you dont like it talk about ways to support it. add to the discussion, dont detract from it

I have a build for sorcerer when you roll a 16 or higher.

Sorcerer is better at it due to meta magic, proficient in con saves and the dragon Sorcerer.

Also the way green flame blade works on a fire dragon sorcerer.

The wizard build you can do it, I think the githyanki is a better choice.

Based on my very limited play, I don't see an armed and armored wizard having some big advantage. With at-will cantrips, most melee/ranged weapons seem a bit pointless - my elf wizard with a longbow and longsword never touched them. And armor - if you plan to be getting into the fray, OK, but why when you can stand back and blaze away?

I had quite the opposite,

I loved my longbow as a wizard.

1d8+3 is better than 1d10 for levels 1-4. And there is no spellcasting involved(better stealth, some RP implications).

And if you get +1 weapon or being a bladesinger it is better from level 5+

Thread necromancy strikes again? Kind of funny, because I'm considering it for my next PC. Is it the optimal choice at higher levels? Probably not. Will I still do it because I think it would be a fun PC to run and I did it in 3E and just ran across the mini the other day? Absolutely.
