D&D 5E What To Do With Racial ASIs?

What would you like to see done with racial trait ASIs?

  • Leave them alone! It makes the races more distinctive.

  • Make them floating +2 and +1 where you want them.

  • Move them to class and/or background instead.

  • Just get rid of them and boost point buy and the standard array.

  • Remove them and forget them, they just aren't needed.

  • But I said I have another idea to share! (second vote).

Anyway, I've solved it.
Well, if you solved it for yourself that is great! Good job. (y)

Personally, I don't like that races are trading in a fixed ASI +1 for two floating ASI +1 and a feat??? Oh, and humans get four more ASI +1???

No, thank you. I think PCs are powerful enough so I don't need to see them even more so!

Oh for goodness sake, reduce point buy / standard array by a couple points if you're worried about it.

Although I do realize I wrote it badly. Humans don't get two ASIs and +1 to all stats. They just get +1 to all stats (like current humans). Non-humans get two floating +1's.

Compared to RAW, this results in:
- Races get -1 ASI, +1 feat. Since a feat is supposed to be worth +2 ASI, that's a net of +1 point.
- Humans get the equivalent of +1 to each of their (presumably) least important stats. Maybe that's a lot? But, again, it's not their two most important stats, and it needs to be worth as much as whatever non-ASI racials the non-humans get.

Alternately, Humans could get four +1 ASIs, the feat, and one language, one skill, one tool.

Oh for goodness sake, reduce point buy / standard array by a couple points if you're worried about it.

If you're(general you) going to do that, then what's the point of even giving bonuses? Players aren't dumb, so they're going to catch on to you giving them bonuses to stats for race, and then docking them stats via points so that the bonuses don't matter. That will cause more frustration than just not giving out bonuses or giving out smaller bonuses.

Oh, Max.

Well, don't become exasperated about it! You said you solved the problem, I pointed out a potential issue with your solution.

Now, to be more serious about it, it isn't really I bad idea as I know a LOT of tables give PCs feats at level 1, even giving two feats to the human variant! In that light for many tables you are sort of removing 1 ASI to make one other one float. If you also allowed the fixed and the float to overlap, I think that might be a worthwhile trade-off for the people interested in it.

The flat +1 to all scores for humans really isn't a big deal since half the scores generally aren't being used by a lot of characters.

Seriously, dude, I can tell you are desperately grasping at straws to try to justify something that you are totally used to and that the very concept of change scares you to your core-- but everything you just listed is just completely stupid.

Mod Note:

While it may be viscerally satisfying, this kind of approach isn't persuasive. Call people desperate, afraid, and their ideas stupid... they aren't going to listen to you actual point. And making it insulting doesn't make your argument look strong - it makes it look like it can't stand unless you confuse the issue with ad hominem nonsense.

Rude, and doesn't work in your favor. Maybe you could do better. Next time, try being respectful. Thanks.

I hate to admit it, but there's a beautiful logic to that idea... Tempting, very tempting...
If anyone is tripping over their own feet about ASIs and starting stats, try this out at your next one-shot. I bet everyone will be much more reasonable afterward. :D

That, plus the feat, would make it possible to start with an 18. Nearly inevitable, maybe.
