is there gonna be an appeal to Gygax himself? deep music....
i think that the Psion will make an extraordinary escape, and go under cover into the adventurer league, preparing It’s glorious return.... flashy music....

Where does metamagic + spell points (power point) DMG variant fail in capturing that flexibility?

You are still stuck with the rigid text of spell + too few Metamagics options.

I would maybe accept Psionics sorcerer if there were maybe 15+ Metamagic options and the Psionic Sorcerer could know more than a Dragon or Wild soul.

Psionics to me feels like "The only limitation is your own mind!"

Thanks for stating a specific desire. Now it's much easier to imagine what you (and perhaps others want).

I think it is a matter of the psion not being able to do anything -distinct-.

This is an issue all across 5e, of course, with some spells appearing on as many as 8 classes' spell lists, but I suppose the hope was that psions might escape that paradigm.

As it stands, any sorcerer can accomplish what a psion can...because there is no psion, per se; only a flavored sorcerer.

Look, if no one else in the party chooses any of the same powers, etc. it can feel distinct...but if an enchanter chooses some of the spells that do the exact same thing, it starts to feel like more of a pretense. Shrug.

If one is coming at this from, say, 3e, then a LOT is missing (like, there was a psion build that could shape ectoplasmic servants and stuff like that.).

I understand that's your particular like, but no previous iteration of D&D psionics has accomplished that either.

I wouldn't expect TOTAL FREEDOM VIA THE POWER OF THE MIIIIND!

But Psionics has always being like 2 steps more flexible than arcane magic in all editions.

I don't think I'd agree with that. Individual powers had some more flexibility than an individual spell, but the psionic classes general had less overall powers known than a caster had spells known. Details depend on the edition, but that was the general trend.

I meant the psionic characters where more flexible in the few effects they could manafest.

Psionics had a narrower range but had more control within that range. More like a superhero who could do a lot with their 1-3 powers.
