D&D 5E 20th level Sorcerer vs the world

The claim he made was that with Skill Empowerment, Trance of Order and Guidance, his Investigation was so high he would be able to detect and avoid all traps (and also disarm them).
Um. I don't see how that would help against a Glyph of Warding with a range greater than his reach, do you?

Not to mention there's some ... difference of opinion as to how many rolls it takes to find, figure out, and disarm a trap. The person I trust most on that here (whom I won't tag in because they don't need this crap) says three, but they also say they allow people to frame their actions so they can bypass those rolls (at least sometimes): Perception to notice something's weird; Investigation to figure out what it is; Thieves' Tools (or something similar) to actually disarm it.

Also, spamming Guidance that way isn't going to be as instantaneous as he seems to think it is. Also, also, none of that will help if someone else is going against his passive checks.

EDIT: Thanks.

Nowhere in the book is Passive Perception said to have a range. Therefore, Passive Perception works planewise. Of course. I was told I was using "DM fiat" when pointing out that it's difficult to identify clearly a guy walking one mile away (apparently, real-world recognition is in the range of 150 ft).

He seems to have a strange idea of what DM Fiat is. If the rules call for the DM to exercise judgment, that's not DM Fiat (or, it's DM Fiat called for in the rules).

I have a sneaking suspicion he wouldn't enjoy actually playing the game with actual people, and that the feeling would be mutual.

Just popped by and I see you guys are still going strong! Nice!

Hey @Hohige I have a question for you. Have you ever heard of Jack the Ripper? Do you think the police were looking for him but he was too sneaky to be caught?

After following this thread all week, I finished my week with 4 solid hours of playing a real D&D game with friends. I am playing a level 7 Half Orc Champion Fighter, and all I could think tonight was, "THIS is how D&D is played, life is good.".
Yeah. I'm DMing a session tonight that I need to prep for. Six 14th-level characters endeavoring to improve the world. I suspect the OP here wouldn't recognize (might not even understand) the game.

Tonight is my night to run, the group is six level 5 PC's, no raw Fighters or Barbarians and the Wizard is a Bladesinger, so it is an interesting mix of sub optimal characters who started thier adventuring careers as zero level commoners. The campaign has a fairy tale vibe to it. It is light in attitude, heavy in RP and lots of talking animals.

There is a product on DMGuild, advertized on this forum, called Candlekeep Environs. I was mildly disappointed that it doesn't seem to mention Foggy Bottom at all.

Possibly to avoid confusion with the neighborhood in Washington, DC, with that name. I believe it's where the Department of State is.

Yeah, that is actually where I got the name from. I always thought it would make a cool name for a fantasy town full of mysterious very powerful people who may or may not secretly control the world.
