D&D 5E Changing life cleric power- Preserve Life

aco175

Legend
I have a NPC life cleric that I want to give a 1/rest power to in exchange of Preserve Life and maybe even Turn Undead as well. The idea is to make it simpler to use in game and have something easy but fair to cool in terms of flavor and effect. It is a dwarf cleric if that matters.

My first idea was to just make the power heal 2 PCs for 5hp. I would leave it open to increase power at higher levels, so at 7th level it heals 4 PCs 10hp or 2 PCs for 15-20hp. Something else would be cool like a boost to AC or allowing the PC to use a hit die of their healing.

Thank you

Sounds good:

Since you're changing it, and it's a dwarf, make sure to insert the material component of either the dwarf cleric, or the target have to chug a mug of ale for the healing to take effect. Well, mostly joking, but you did say flavorful.

In analysis it's initially better than preserve life (no 50% maximum) and More HP (1st level preserve life is only 5) but scales down quickly depending on how often you increase the healing. Since it's an NPC, you shouldn't have too much trouble balancing it as you go.

What's the problem you're trying to solve? Is the player taking too long to distribute the hp?
It is mostly to do away with figuring out half HP and dividing it among the wounded. I know the players could tell me how much they need and it is not that hard. I also partially wanted to flavor the ability to give the NPC some remembrance.

Another thought would be to have the cleric make an attack and also be able to heal some.

I came across the old 2e supplement for FR for demi-human gods and was reading the dwarf spell Marthamor Thunderbolts. It lets you shoot 2 rays that either heal 1d8 or damage for 3d6 with a hit. I was thinking of modifying it for 5e with 2 bolts that can heal for 5 points of damage or damage for 1d8. I can always add to it at higher levels for more healing, damage, or more rays. I think most of the time if would be for healing though and not sure it should qualify for the extra healing from the life domain.
