Each class is different, clerics and wizards require more domanins and schools than other classes.
That would be because other classes don't have domains or schools.
But they don't require more subclasses than the other classes.

Well, then I'm glad I don't have to play with the limited material with which you appear comfortable. This is why I would rather they made a new edition rather than the "revised" 5.5. It gives them a great excuse to sell you the same editions stuff all over again with minor alterations. They covered the major concepts. The other concepts can either make do until the rest of the subclasses get printed, or you can port them over with relative ease.
I mean, we are in theory "missing" knowledge, nature and storm. Two of which are easily (and in my opinion better) handled by the Druid and the last one can be Trickery or light domain easily in a thematic concept. The Light actually fits really well thematically with Knowledge, since it is about "knowing things" and "Revealing the truth".
Plus, ALL the classes could have more concepts mechanically supported. That's why they all have more subclasses than these four.
We don't know yet what new Cantrips exist, there might be a few new cool cleric attacks (also toll of the dead is already one of the strongest). But anyway Druids also gain the Cantrip advantage and they certainly have some jucy attacks. You can used a Wis-based ranged attack as a Cleric if you're a High Elf or a Tiefling (with the possible exception of Chthonic Tiefling depending on whether Chill Touch was changed or not).
I'm thinking about the times when clerics had heavy armour and use of bludgeoning weapons when wizards were limited to daggers, staves and darts.I'm bolding the bit that I think isn't true -- Cleric cantrips may do more damage on average (once the +WIS bonus kicks in at level 8), but they are less fun, starting from level 1, since they aren't attacks that the player rolls, they are saves the DM has the creatures make.

Don't use quotation marks on a word I didn't use. I said I'm glad I don't have to play with the limitations with which you are apparently comfortable, not that I couldn't, and I certainly never said the cleric was unplayable.Even if they made a brand-new editions, I doubt they would make 8 subclasses for every single class.
I mean, lest we forget, the cleric by your definition was "unplayable" without the inclusion of the Grave and Forge clerics in Xanathars, which were highly requested for a while. Yet, somehow, we still managed to make it work.
It's a good thing you can use all the 2014 domains with the 24 cleric, rather than wait 5 years for them to make a 6e version of the forge domain.Well, then I'm glad I don't have to play with the limited material with which you appear comfortable.
