I accidentally posted my thoughts on stabnerd lore on another thread:
Keep in mind that a loose 'base' lore for a class doesn't mean you're restricted to that lore at all. Only a certain few are that restrictive. I get that some DM's will force you into only following the one exact story the class suggests. But with the exception of a few like warlock and paladin, most as usually left to the player.
Take a look at ranger: "Warriors of the wilderness, rangers specialize in hunting the monsters that threaten the edges of civilization—humanoid raiders, rampaging beasts and monstrosities, terrible giants, and deadly dragons. They learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble. Rangers focus their combat training on techniques that are particularly useful against their specific favoured foes."
So by that, you have to be a wilderness living monster hunter, protecting civilisation.
Except you can easily pick the guild artisan background, choose strength, wield a greataxe, and pick up the feat to get heavy armour. All as a ranger.
So now you're an elite dwarven warrior who used to be a mason, but joined the army as an elite vanguard/breeching soldier in a war against elementals. And then got dishonourably discharged and took up adventuring instead. So absolutely nothing to do with what the class description says.
