And if you are Standard Array, you can get your 16 win just that +1.

Is that optimized?
Not as optimized as the 17 with a +2. That 17 becomes an 18 with a half feat at level 4. And the +2 isn't as optimized as a race with +2 and racial abilities that match the class.

If someone really wants to number crunch, you can eek out little bonuses here and there, which don't mean nearly as much in 5e as they did in say 3e. I used to have to watch out for power gaming during 3e(my favorite edition), as it could unbalance things, but I don't even care in 5e. It's just not a big deal.

Well, I mean I've seen his character sheet. His saving throw for his one spell (fun fact, he can't prep two spells until level 5!) is DC 7. He definitely has a 4 Wis.

This was kind of a weird game, where we rolled stats and started at level 0; we didn't pick classes until about 5 sessions in. Druid just fit his character, based on what happened during level 0 play.

Our group has 7 players, we can afford to have some characters not pull their weight in combat. Challenge play isn't really the focus for this group, it's very much focused on character color and thespianism.
Then perhaps you should create a thespian group and stop pretending you are playing D&D. Given you played 5 sessions before even selecting a class, it is impossible to say you were playing D&D, since there is no level 0 in 5e, and you have to pick a class from the beginning.

Yes, but my vision of the game is what's important TO ME. To me, it is important to have the 16+ stat. Are you claiming the moral authority to tell me that my aesthetic preferences are incorrect?
No. I simply claim that fixed ASI can do what you claim floating ASI can with the same results and with no power creep.

Why do people on this forum always assume that someone stating a fact is claiming moral high ground? I never claimed that my view was morally superior. I just debunk the fact that your side say that we are locked out of concepts with fixed ASI when in fact, we are not. You are the ones claiming that fixed ASI can't do what floating ASI can. And I just proved to you that you are wrong on that assumption. I am not telling you that you are wrong in loving floating ASI. Your preferences are of no consequences to me. But your claim that fixed ASI are inferior because they prevent character concepts is just flat out wrong.

No, it’s not.

You keep saying this and are wrong every time I've seen you say it. Here, from the 5e DMG.

"The D&D rules help you and the other players have a good time, but the rules aren't in charge. You're the DM, and you are in charge of the game."

A 5e DM who adds level 0 is in fact playing D&D, because the rules aren't in charge, he is.

If you assume that Rule 0 means you can make up any rule you like, then you may as well call chess D&D, because you call your Knights Rogues, your Queen a Wizard, and your pawns Fighters. It is the equivalent.
