While reprinted, these races have all been updated to the current standard used by WotC for D&D races used in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, including a free choice of ability score increases (increase one by 2 points and another by 1 point; or increase three by 1 point), and small races not suffering a movement speed penalty.

The video below from Nerd Immersion delves into the races in more detail.

Realllllllly interested in how this changes will be implemented in Beyond.

Although it would be awkward, I would prefer the old books to not change and then you could use the new ones if you wished.
I don't care much either way. But if they just update D&D Beyond instead of keeping both options, seems like they lose an opportunity to change more. I mean, if they just update the races in D&D Beyond, I'm getting them for free.

It should be possible for them to group this all under one toggle (like they do for Critical Role) … so you can either include the new content or not.

That being said, I have a sneaking suspicion that WotC is going to tell DDB that the content in this book replaces the content from the previous books.
Yeah, or just list all the options and make it obvious which are from which book. I would rather have that than a yes/no toggle. Let my players choose which version they want to use.

I don’t get this book at all. Removing subraces, removing spells from monsters, and all being reprints of past stuff, is this what wotc imagines veterans of their game want? Did they think after 7+ years of playing their game people wanted less detail and less options in the content they already paid for?
I'm sure they did a lot of market research and determined that the answer is "yes."
My secret for a happy gaming life is that once you are happy with where your game is at, there is no point getting upset when something is published for it that is something you don't like. You don't have to buy it.

Everytime they do a new edition they change stuff. But change sells books.

I'm still upset they gave cleric attack cantrips and ruined this edition. So even if Halfling now move as fast as a human that's less upsetting than Clerics shooting laser beams.

It doesn't bother me that this book is being bundled in a gift set.
It doesn't bother me that player races will have different abilities than monster statblocks.
It doesn't bother me that races are changing in this new book from what appeared in the PHB 7 years ago.
It doesn't bother me that I have not yet heard of a release date of this book on its own.
It doesn't bother me that D&D Beyond will need to go through some adjustments, nor what those adjustments will be.
It doesn't bother me if these are enough changes to be considered a .5 edition, or a stealth 6th edition.

Why is this the case? Because I understand that I am not special. My wants and needs are not universal. And I am not so self-involved that I'm left feeling "abandoned" by WotC or the game because things are changing away from what I've gotten used to. There is no reason why I have to change with these changes. I don't have to change at all. I can play the game the way I did last year, five years ago, at the start of the edition if I so choose. The same way I didn't have to change from 4E to 5E at the time if I didn't want to. Same way I didn't need to move from 4E to Essentials if I didn't want to. Or 3E to 3.5E when that was released if I didn't want to. This Dungeons & Dragons game is not so precious that I need it to remain exactly how I want it, nor do I need to attribute any amount of self-worth to MY version above all others and thus get all bent out of shape when it wants to move away from that.

It doesn't bother me. It never has. Didn't then and doesn't now.

And that's how we ended up with New Coke. I kid, I kid. Sort of.

No matter what direction D&D goes in, if people are having fun with it then I'm happy for them and I wish WotC continued success. It may not be what I prefer, but I'm okay knowing the world doesn't revolve around my wants and desires.

Agreed. WotC knows its fanbase. They know a lot of their fans can be a bit...obsessive and completionist. There's also a strong desire to get all the latest books for all the cool new widgets. Packaging the book like this is manipulative.

All the completionists and people who want all the new stuff now are. They either buy this now or they don't have a complete set and miss out on all the new stuff until some later date. That WotC hasn't announced the later date is clearly manipulative of its costumer base.

It's a D&D product released to a fanbase of completionists and people always scrambling for the latest and greatest toys in the game. It's mainly for people with money who're fans of D&D. WotC doesn't care if people buy the same books multiple times. Quite the opposite in fact. They directly benefit from people buying multiple copies. Hence the collector covers. Multiple DM packs. The now two gift sets. Etc.

They announced it as a separate release so that fans wouldn't be up in arms about the packaging decision. Imagine the outrage if this book were only ever available in this gift set. This way WotC also gets multiple sales of MotM along with repeat sales of XGE and TCE.
gotta agree. Even I am saying "wait can I afford to rebuy 2 to get the 1 I want?" I am having trouble becuse they have not said when the 1 will be available stand alone... is it 3 months (I can wait) is it a year (man that would bug me)

I'm not sure why people are confused by the release strategy: this is part if a gift set for people who haven't bought Xanathar's, Tasha's, Volo's or Mordenkainen's: new players who maybe recently got the core gift set. Between the core set and this set, a new player would have almost all yhe crunch from 5E (except the most recent or least generic books). They aren't trying to "screw" completionists, they are trying to help people new to the game, who are more numerous at any rate.

As a bonus for them, they are using it to test put ideas for the next iteration of the game (5.5 or 6E, call it what ye will). They have said that they intend to make it backwards compatible with base 5E: and by that I assume it means straight 5E and straight 6E options can coexist at the same table, or even the same character, as with these revised Race choices.

If that were the case, wouldn't they release it simultaneously as a stand alone?
