D&D 5E D&D New Edition Design Looks Soon?

WotC’s Ray Winninger has hinted on Twitter that we may be seeing something of the 2024 next edition of D&D soon — “you’ll get a first look at some of the new design work soon.”.

I crit!
And to go further in 2e I think they changed a lot unknowingly. Lots of the vibe and style and word of mouth way that earlier D&D was run was lost. Because they didn’t like that style and they couldn’t talk to the other creators.

Also they were pretty much verboten to speak to the earlier creators in Gary’s “side”. Which led to more subconscious changes.

It’s a very different situation now.

Actually I dint think they did. A lot of the 2e dialog was about them working to remain backward compatible in spite of their actual preferences.
The fact remains that 2e was mechanically very similar to 1e, but had just as much of a philosophical shift as the new "still 5e but not really" does with 2014's 5e. They were different editions then and should be different editions now. It makes it much easier to separate them in your mind if you use proper terminology, and you can dismiss the one you don't like if you have a preference.

I don't know if you consider that good or bad. I've certainly seen a lot more 4e talk lately than even a couple years ago.
There does seem an uptick. I wonder what is driving it? Did newer players discover it and add it to the conversation? Is there a push for a retroclone I am not aware of?

I think it's important to have at least 2 rpgs that you like, or better yet, 2 editions of D&D. It really helps break up the burnout of a particular edition. Last Saturday, after 2 years of 5e pretty much exclusively, I started Night Below (a 2e original campaign) using Chromatic Dungeons. It's a nice refresher of a different system, and I'm sure when the campaign is done, I'll be more receptive to going back to 5e.
We use oWoD and multi superhero games alot to break up but D&D is the one we comeback to the most...even if we gripe about it

I suspect a lot of 4e fans feel that recent changes in the game have been going intheir direction and they are excited about it, and want to throw a little "I told you so" out there for good measure. I don't know if I wouldn't do the same in that position.

Me too. That way I can happily ignore it, without having to parse all the 5e talk from the 5e revised (but not 6e) talk. This new direction should be an actual new direction, so the 5e as originally intended can join the ranks of the former editions.
that is the funny thing, we WILL find ways to seperate it. even Morrus himself will end up with 'Tags'

Honestly, it feels like there's been more of an uptick in discussions of Basic D&D and AD&D than anything else.

In any given week, someone is bound to mention 4th Edition. But up until very recently, entire months would pass before someone would mention AD&D 1E.
