D&D (2024) Based upon what we currently know, what degree of "edition update" is 5.5?

Essentials is essentially 4.5e, only WotC also published free errata to update the 2008 books to the Essentials Standards.
THIS. IS. AN. EDITION. WARRIOR. LIE.

Sorry, but this particular bit of misinformation has been repeated at least three time in the last couple of days, and I am done being polite about it. Yes, Essentials conincided with several errata, and incorporated those errata (and all the previous ones) where relevant. Yes, it presented alternate versions of several classes, which were fully playable alongside their predecessors. Neither of these things make Essentials a separate edition, especially considering that Essentials was fully compatible with the non-Essentials 4e produces that came before it and after it (and vice versa of course).

If they’re requiring you to buy new books to be compatible, then it’s more likely a new edition. But they said it’s backward compatible, so if new adventures and options can be attached to 2014 books, it’s not really a new edition…
I would call it DM side compatible not PC side compatible

So Original D&D doesn’t count as it’s own edition?

Nor do Basic, B/X, BECMI, BB/RC, Classic, Player’s Options, Essentials Red Box, or Essentials?

From as far as I can tell, you’re counting:
1e AD&D
2e AD&D
3e D&D
3.5e D&D
4e D&D
5e D&D
One D&D
Sure, this just goes to show useless the term "Edition" has become. OneD&D core is set to be somewhere between the 7th and 15th Edition, depending on how you count.

Is that more or fewer than the number of threads where 4e gets brought up non sequitur?
they are normally the same... if someone makes an off hand comment about a previous non 4e edition they may get some questions but no one is attacking... you bring up (example in a discussion about how to use skills I gave 3 examples 1 from 3.5 1 from 4e and 1 from 2 or 3 years ago in 5e... everyone skipped over the first ad last and every single reply was about the 4e one and we had a 10+ page discussion about if it was 'too video gamey'.) 4e there are people who will jump to attack.

Heck discussions of using bloodied as a condition once turned into an argument on how 4e had the worst sales of any D&D (not possible to prove and nothing hinted at that)

before talk of a new edition I was getting gun shy. I had been taught not to touch the stove, so don't mention warlords or bloodied or skill challanges. But as 2024 approaches I refuse to be shut down I will talk about what I liked and disliked about editions...

no we have not... we have had a half way between them.

except for base human, half elf, oh and the mountain dwarf that all do NOT have +2/+1 the get MORE to compensate for getting less race abilities... and the 2014 one has skills and tools that apper to not have those.
Base Human, Half-Elf, and Mountain Dwarf are all perfectly balanced with the other options. All of them are operating off of the same point buy system of 3 ASI's. That's why there is no problem with using Tasha's swapping with Half-Elf or Mountain Dwarf per Crawford, that's why Standard Humans do so well in actual play.

Tasha's makes the design more apparent, and OneD&D moves +3 to Background, making every Race in OneD&D an ASI and a half in power...same as every 2014 Race if you follow the sidebar in the Backgrounds section.
