It looks like the 1.1 OGL leak is inspiring DMs to run future games with different system rules.

How are casual players responding to DMs who are moved about what’s going on in the community?

Are casual players pushing back against DMs making changes due to all this?

I think you're making a lot of assumptions that DMs will care. Will some DMs want to switch? Sure. That happens all the time anyway. I'll have gamed with two different groups by this weekend (one I play in, one I DM) and I suppose there's a chance there will a small revolt, but I have no plans to switch at the moment. I chatted with one of the guys in my D&D group (who also DMs a different group) yesterday for a while and the topic never came up.

Truth be told if I stopped purchasing or using products that crossed ethical boundaries I'd likely be homeless, naked and starving on the streets. I certainly wouldn't be typing this on a device that has such a negative impact on the environment and people's lives. I don't like what WOTC may be doing but I also don't think they have a particularly strong legal case for shutting down other companies as long they don't incorporate anything from the 2024 edition. We don't even have the official document less and the case will go to court.

My general view. The DM does the most of the work for a campaign. If the DM needs access to more 3PP content (classes, settings, rules expansions like mass combat/stronghold building, adventures, etc) then that DM likely has more at stake with the OGL's threatened status.
Therefore, this isn't really so much an issue facing the players - but it might impact those of us running games and which systems provide the support we need to provide that experience.
So it indirectly may impact casual players. Because even casual players often have a DM who is not casual.

In my group only I and one player know anything about this and he just found out today. We'll talk to the group Monday and coincidentally wrap up our campaign. I will present different options to the group but my money is on starting a new 5th edition campaign.

I guess I have thoughts to share.

I've been talking about moving away from D&D5 for months, and my players have been broadly receptive.

This doesn't have anything to do with the OGL debacle. That might impact my decision to purchase new oneD&D books next year, but that was already in doubt for other reasons:
  • 2022 slump in the content quality of Wizards' D&D products
  • Dissatisfaction with increased combat focus and level-based advancement
  • Jeremy Crawford's 3rd Edition design sensibilities

But the most important thing I want to say is that if players have the energy to push back on their dungeon masters wanting to run other systems, they have the energy to run their own damn D&D5 campaigns.

I've been in one conversation about it, outside of this forum, with two DM friends and one of my players. The most prolific DM I know made a short post on facebook. No one else I know involved in the hobby has mentioned it. I haven't even received any "Hey, do you know what's going on with this?" and I'm the guy who tends to get those. I'm not going to push either of my current 5e games I run to switch.

Obviously, that doesn't mean other people aren't listening and forming opinions, but for lack of more complete picture, that's the "casual" reaction I'm seeing.

There’s another thread about jumping to other systems. I didn’t invent this, some on ENWorld have already said they in the planning already. Because I didn’t say “some DMs” didn’t mean I meant “all DMs”.

I’m asking those who are making those plans due to the leaked OGL 1.1 reasons.

5E is dead next year and was already looking weak as it was. With WOTC's revealing itself to be what it is, I'm done buying anything from them.
Games in my area and heck even online as so hungry for DM's that players will play whatever a DM is willing to run.

All that said, it would be silly to stop playing a game you like with books you already paid for just because the company that made them makes you angry. They wouldn't suffer, you would.

My players are "casual players" - so casual, in fact, that I guarantee they haven't heard about any of this. I'm fairly sure they wouldn't care, for that matter.

So casual that I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be thrilled with buying new books or learning a new system. We enjoy the 5e game we play and I don't see a reason or need to change.
