D&D (2024) New leak looks real bad

Some worldbuilders or spec evo writers can produce absolute reams of material on their setting. I'm not sure why they would want that instead of a cheaper or free source, but "unlimited articles" is probably what a lot of people really want.
I use a Mediawiki for my campaign and keeping it up to date and secure is a pain in the ass, so I do it less frequently than I'd like. So outsourcing some of that to either World Anvil or to some other commercial wiki site has its appeal. (At this point, I have thousands of pages, so I'd need a site that would do a mass import to start.)

I'm so confused...

So did WotC lie about the slide being theirs and the Reddit user lie about making it?

Or is it being a hoax true... it just so happened to be exactly what they were planning.

If it does turn out to be true, it's just another "thread" in the "quilt of dishonestly" being weaved by....

Haha, okay, that's a little dramatic. But seriously, this rollout has been such a disappointment. Boring playtest, death of OGL, paid subscription... Nothing about this new edition is getting me excited.

Well, it's just... do you (generic you) need or even really want $30 of new stuff each month? Let's assume that's really what's going to happen.
I dunno - what stuff? I mean, I pay almost that much for my Apple Music family subscription. My various streaming services add up to way more than that. I probably go to about one movie/month, which is more than that. Oh, and I read a lot, so I spend at least that much on books. And you don't even wanna know what I spend on miniatures and terrain.

Long story short: $30/month is not much money. But is it too much for what WotC is going to offer? I don't know. You don't know. Nobody knows because none of us can see the future. What I do know is that it's up to each person how to spend their money, and if WotC charges $30/month and it is popular, then good for them, and good for their customers. Anyone who doesn't like it, doesn't have to buy it, and their opinions don't matter one bit.

Again, people spend WAY more than that on stuff that is completely worthless to me. Do you know what people are spending on tickets to football games right now? Just to see a bunch of big dudes do a few seconds of action every now and then? It makes no sense! To me! But it's a lot more than $30/month and if that's what brings them joy for their money, then I am happy for them.

So if someone wants to buy this and you don't, I don't even know why you think you should have an opinion about it. Are there other ways that you want to tell them how to live their lives, or is it just when it comes to paying for D&D subscriptions?

That's gotta be a hoax right?

No one is going to go for that. Those prices are insane. People not going to be able to pay for rent or heating if they want to play DnD.

I'm getting more and more sure that they're going to remove all 5e content from DnD beyond. It's the only way they will be able to force people to move over to that joke. And instead people will just jump to other games like Black Flag.

So if someone wants to buy this and you don't, I don't even know why you think you should have an opinion about it.
In 2013, a year after giving consumers the option of renting their Creative Cloud suite from them for $50/month, Adobe stopped selling single-purchase perpetual licenses for their Creative Suite because their consumer research said their userbase was "overwhelmingly" in favor. Since then, you haven't been able to buy a copy of Photoshop.

Dan Rawson, Senior Vice President of Dungeons & Dragons, joined Wizards this year from Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft's service-based business management suite and sibling to the better-known Microsoft/Office 365 service.

I have an opinion about other people's purchasing habits in this space because I would like oneD&D to have a physical, single-purchase release!

The only thing that particularly bothers me about that leak is the OGL 1.0a stuff.

The rest of it is largely irrelevant because D&D Beyond is useless to me, so whether it's $30 a month or $0 makes little difference - it's no sale either way.

It would sting a little if they stop supporting physical product (assuming they didn't switch to offering PDFs for sale - not that that's likely). But then, given that deauthorizing OGL 1.0 is a deal-breaker for me, even that doesn't matter that much.

The whole push towards VTT and subscription content will make the relationship between WotC and Critical Role and the other livestreamers a bit interesting. A big part of what hooks people into CR is the interaction around the table. Will WotC be shoving their sponsored streamers in the direction of using a VTT, or running games with their laptops in front of them?

If you don't care about (or actively dislike) content related to a particular setting, or you have no particular need for yet another rogue archetype, but that's what they want to give you, you're stuck paying for it. It's not like now where you can decide if you want to spend your money on a new book. You very likely won't be able to choose to not get the content and pay less that month to keep your access to the tools.

And honestly, why you (specific you) may have no problem with $30/month, a lot of other people will have problems with that. That's a lot of money for many people (including myself). Especially when I can game TotM-style in Discord, or in person should my group go back to that, for free.
You don't get it thought.

We don't know how many tiers there are and they offer.

We do not know if they is a tier between $0 and $30. We do not know if what the 2-87 tiers unlock.

So, how can I have a problem with something I don't know about?

That's my point. It's ridiculous to worry about the price of a product you do not know about.
