A 2022 study posted on the website for the National Library of Medicine noted that critical reviews do affect box office revenues:

We used path analysis to examine how critical reviews and user reviews simultaneously affect box office revenues using eWOM data collected from Metacritic.com and IMDb.com, and box office revenue information collected from BoxOfficeMojo.com. The results showed that critical reviews valence not only directly affects box office revenues but also increases active postings in the community and user reviews volume, thus indirectly leading to greater box office revenues.

In a survey conducted by Podium (2017), an overwhelming 93 percent of consumers agreed that online reviews influence their buying decisions.

Many studies have shown that critical reviews significantly affect consumer choices and product sales (Eliashberg and Shugan, 1997; Basuroy et al., 2003, 2006; Boatwright et al., 2007). For example, Eliashberg and Shugan (1997) reported that critical reviews are associated with late and cumulative box office revenue but not with early box office revenue. By contrast, Hennig-Thurau et al.’s (2006) study showed that critical reviews have a significant impact on short-term but not long-term box office. In addition, several studies have shown that film critics play dual roles as both influencers and predictors (Basuroy et al., 2003; Boatwright et al., 2007). Reinstein and Snyder (2005) applied a difference-in-difference approach to indicate the impact of movie critics on sales. Thus, higher critical review valence increases box office revenues (Eliashberg and Shugan, 1997; Basuroy et al., 2003).
Do critical reviews affect box office revenues?

The good news for Honor Among Thieves is the reviews have been very positive. Audiences have also reacted positively. So strong word of mouth may help the film maintain its legs over the long term. That the film had a good but unspectacular opening weekend does not surprise me. We can't count on brand loyalty as the last D&D feature film was 23 years ago and a Fantastic Four (2015) level disaster. I am glad J&J made a good movie. I know how much worse it could have been.

And Sonic was pack in fame on my Megadrive.

What I said was outside USA Nintendo didn’t do as well they got outsold in various markets.

Even in USA I think they were outsold for a while Nintendo pulled ahead later.
They were only outsold in the US because Sega was available for 2 years before SNES and once it came out it was flipped. Lol

No it was 30.75 million sold worldwide, including the US.

And 21 million of that 30 million was USA according to that link.

You're aware that link says 8nmilli9n elsewhere and 42 million approx is USA and Japan?

None of which contradicts anything I said earlier.

Mario was a thing elsewhere (I played it) but it didn't get numbers like USA with 30% of household's having it.

You're basically nitpicking at this point easy way to solve it should we just look at the box office on Monday or Tuesday? Easy to compare domestic to international.

They're not irrelevant and I'm sure they add to box office.

Alone tgey don't guarantee a box office hit is the main point. Plenty of critical darlings flop I suppose tgey would flop harder with bad reviews.

But if I had to pick as a studio I woukd go with audience scores look at Fast and Furious franchise for example.

In the other guess tge box office thread I guessed 3456780 box office because I noticed a lack of buzz outside D&D circles and movies in March often get around 40 million domestically.

I was slightly wrong but not by that much.

D&D critic score won't matter to much if the movie flops and that's what this thread is about. It's not if you liked it or of the critics liked it or even if the audience liked it.

Critic reviews won't matter, audience reviews won't matter
to be fair, if the sales fall short of breaking even, then these two are already factored in and did not matter enough to prevent it.

What percentage it needs to make in the movies vs merchandise, streaming / rental and DVD sales is anyone’s guess
