Effects of writers strike on Sci Fi & Fantasy genre

Bah! Get a bunch of larpers to do it.

I mean, I'm sure that there is some type of audience for The Real LARPers of Beverly Hills.

As I often ask during my periodic streamer power rankings ... how does Amazon Prime spend so much money so fruitlessly?
There's a really good article, I think, in the Hollywood Reporter earlier this spring about how it's a real moneypit. It's good to be a billionaire. And it keeps Bezos from buying Snapchat or something.
It's not that they always make bad shows. It's just that ... almost all of their big-budget shows are so completely forgettable, or have such giant glaring problems.
Boy, the final season of Mrs. Maisel is certainly a final season, which is about all that can be said for it.

Given what we know of Bezos, we can be reasonably certain that he would turn the entire platform into his own personal Thirst Trap.

Sad thing? It would still be better than whatever wonderboy is doing to twitter.

I really want one of the Twitter alternatives to finally click.

Twitter itself is starting to break down more and more (not to mention Musky appears to be having some sort of breakdown) but all of the alternatives have problems, foremost among them way too few people there, which is a killer for people like me who use it for work.

Last season was regrettable (like, "Gallery of Regrettable Foods" level of regrettable). What I've seen of the final season has been a clear improvement.

It's not bad per se, and doing flashforwards to the future both makes sense for a finale season and keeps them from just doing more of what they've done in previous seasons, but it feels pretty incohesive in the way it was done. (And I was someone who thought the Lost flashforwards were done well, to give you a benchmark for what I will tolerate.)

They are finally calling out that "hey, maybe Midge and Susie are actually both terrible a lot of the time," which I think most viewers have clued in to since at least season two.

So far it seems cohesive enough to me. YMMV, of course.

I'm back in Lost Season 3. The only flash-forwards we have seen have been Desmond's visions.

Fame has a price, and paying it won't be pleasant for those around you.

Oooooooh boy, looks like House of the Dragon Season 2 started shooting a couple weeks ago, and they are moving forwards without writers on hand:

HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” arguably WBD’s highest-profile TV series, is currently still in production on Season 2 in the U.K. amid the writers strike in the U.S., with sources stating that all scripts were “completed.”

From what I understand, this could be a rough one.

The two sides are WAY far apart, and the AMPTP isn't even responding or countering to a lot of their demands. In addition, the AMPTP is internally divided, which won't make it easier.

Plus we have the Directors and the Actors coming up soon - if they strike as well, this could snowball. On the other hand, if they undercut the WGA, that would affect the writers in a bad way. As of right now, the DGA and SGA both have some similar concerns.

I'm hearing among the AMPTP is the new member Netflix. They joined the AMPTP just a year ago, I suspect its to sabotage the their competitors from the inside. Their business model is very different and they might be the only streaming platform that makes money. Paramount+ lost $500 million in the first quarter. Drag the strike out and any hope of profitable could end up shot and some companies could dump their streaming service entirely. Netflix can better survive the hits, it'd be worth it to take out their competition long term.

I have been ... indisposed ... for about a week, and I was able to catch up on S3 of Picard and to finally watch Reservation Dogs (SO GOOD!) and Shadow and Bone.

I have lots of thoughts about SAB, and I haven't watched the last two episodes of S2 yet, but while it is far from perfect, I really enjoy the world building, the crows, and I LOVE the Russian-influenced fantasy.

Keep telling people Shadow and Bone is top 3 out of the recent fantasy shows. It was cheap as well.
