In this case, I wonder if it's based on his professional relationship with the current IP holder, and a desire to keep that positive.
Maybe. I admit I was suprised when he tweeted out that it didn't even bother him that his name was absent from the credits of Honor among Thieves. But by all accounts he's just a very good-natured fellow (sometimes overly good-natured, if "good-natured" can be said to include a character trait like "willing to risk a dirty-old-man joke with a near-stranger") who legitimately feels grateful rather than ripped-off when he thinks about having sold his creation to TSR.
