Please let me hijack your complaint to talk about one of my own.

"Utilize" is worthless; it just means "use". You can save us time and energy by saying "use". They are the same, but one is needlessly longer. If you think "utilize" makes it sound more technical or serious or meaningful, let me tell you it doesn't. It implies nothing, other than that you wanted to use a longer word. It's a cheap veneer of syllables used to hide a lack of meaning.

I will not say more. If I wanted to say more about the word "use", see the above rant.

Thanks you for your time.
Tightened that rant up a bit for you. 😉

The words "use" and "utilize". "Utilize" is a worthless word. It just means "use". Whenever you say or write "utilize" you can save us all the time and energy and just say "use". They are exactly the same, one is just needlessly longer. If you think that "utilize" makes it sound more technical or serious or meaningful in any way, let me assure you it doesn't. It implies nothing, other than the fact that you wanted to use a longer word. It's a cheap veneer of of syllables used to hide a lack of meaning beneath.

I will not expand on this. If I wanted to expand on the word "use", well, see the above rant.

Thank you for your time.
George Carlin and William Zinsser have similar rants about the softening of the English language.

However, "utilize" allows me to use the word "utilization," which I think we can all agree is much longer and has more syllables than "use" or "usage."

Look, man, the boss asked me to fill conference call time as much as possible so he doesn't have to say anything before tee time at the golf course, so I wantdesire to useutilize as many longmultisyllabic words as possiblecan be inserted into this comment.

If you make use of longer words, you fill the pages of a 5 page - double-spaced essay far more quickly ;)
