History is a lie agreed upon. Indeed I have seen entire histories change, people will even tell you straight up to your face what you saw happen did not happen.

People who think research is easy haven’t done any research that involves non-digital resources.

I actually miss the days when writing a major essay involved having a dozen books cracked open on a Library desk.

I actually miss the days when writing a major essay involved having a dozen books cracked open on a Library desk.

Having to ILL books from around the world. Talking to some librarian or archivist on the far side of the planet because they have a book or journal you need but it’s not an item they can or will ship, so you have to ask them to photocopy or scan it and send that to you. Deciphering cursive from 200 years ago in a language you barely speak. Asking an archivist to handle a physical object with white gloves and describe it and interacting with it to you as well as taking pictures and sending those along. Traveling to a historical society and spending a few days reading some local person’s journal or diary…

Research is so much more than a quick keyword search of easily accessible digital resources.

I only had the "white gloves" experience once, but it was direct rather than remote, at the Royal Ontario Museum a lifetime ago.

Yes. I mean also kiss people simply will lie. It is funny as well that history, then psychology is mentioned, next just add radio and television. A perfect score for propaganda, my Dad worked doing that for 20 years in the military and those were his three degrees.

A dagger. I think I was 10 or 11 at the time.
