Well, that is a thing, but I'd suggest its often more than once; its just that one particular case will stand out to them. But people absolutely carry around bad experiences with GMs semi-indefinitely.
Yeah. Which is utterly sad. You’d think after having something as light-hearted and supposedly fun as an RPG be a traumatic experience they’d stop playing rather than insisting on continuing to play and assuming every GM is bad and out to get them.

The bad may not outweigh the good. And even if it eventually does, it may not outweigh the hope for it to get better. A D&D group is a social circle, and it can take a lot to break out of those bonds even once it stops being so fun.

Life is full of really good experiences alloyed sometimes with really bad ones. Walking away from them in the future lets the bad part win. But that doesn't mean you can entirely get away from the bad part.

As righteous as it may feel in the moment to vent ones frustration on an inanimate object...

1. It doesn't care.
2. You probably paid for it.
3. You probably get to pay to replace it.
4. Your hands are full of small fragile bones, as we are pathetic meat sacks.

One would think I'd have learned by my age...but no, and will I get to tolerate the consequences?
