Vecna: Eve of Ruin

D&D 5E Vecna: Eve of Ruin Coming May 21st!

You make it sound like that is a bad thing.

The vast majority of people who play D&D not only never played earlier versions, they weren't even born before TSR collapsed.
So? Is D&D only for those who've never played anything but 5e now? If so, perhaps they should let us know how little anyone else matters to them.

No, 5E is the game that it is, which has made it far and away the most successful version of D&D ever. Therefore, expecting that it be something different is misguided and maybe even a little myopic.

If you want dangerous D&D where characters are crawling through the mud to survive, there are literally dozens of options readily available, including the previous versions of the game. Complaining that 5E doesn't have Save or Die and that characters are too competent makes no sense.

I'm not sure I understand your point.

Lamenting that 5E doesn't possess the same sort of mechanics as earlier editions and doesn't try to emulate the feel of those editions is sort of silly considering the fan base is not the same. There is no shortage of options for playing different sorts of D&D, especially ones that try and emulate Old School play (we can argue about whether there was "a" old school style, and/or whether the style promoted by the OSR is that) but 5E isn't one of them.
WotC 5e is, however, front and center and can't be ignored if you interact with other gamers at all.

Okay. That's not really relevant to the question, which was essentially "why can't this module that is a celebration of all thing 5E be more like AD&D 1E?"

The existence of 5E and its fans does not stop anyone from playing whatever RPG or version of D&D they prefer.

Also, just to be clear, I am not a 5E proponent. It's okay. It does everything sort of fine. It's the MCU of RPGs and that's great, but there are many games that "do D&D" better (for a number of different definitions of D&D).

If you've been playing D&D for decades and don't like that obvious trend, complaining about it makes perfect sense to me, even if WotC doesn't care. Otherwise, you're just asking folks to swallow their irritation.

One could argue that an adventure celebrating 50 years of D&D should celebrate more than just the last ten years of it. I don't recall any materials celebrating "ten years of 5e".

You don’t know anything about it yet, other than the fact that it involves 7 campaign settings and 3 archmages. So how are you in a position to criticise?

You’ve just been shown the full release schedule for 2024 and early 2025. It’s the start of February. That’s the plan. What more do you want from them? Pre approval before it goes to print? I’m not sure what standard of excellence WotC are supposed to be following that is somehow unsatisfactory for you.

There’s a point where supporting earlier versions of something becomes a matter for the fans not the supplier. Same with cars, same with music, same with clothing etc etc.

You can’t expect official support for obsolete products for eternity. It’s just not reasonable

Obviously we don't have a lot of details yet, but what we do know very much points to this module as being the culmination of the first decade of 5E, adventure and setting wise. It's possible they just forgot to mention the Dale Lands, or Kara-Tur, or Dark Sun, or Mystara, but the list of settings we will be visiting IS the list of 5E settings.
