I feel like that's a pretty reasonable reaction for a small-town farmgirl from Kansas suddenly discovering she's in NYC. She's definitely not "home" by the farthest stretch of the imagination.

It's certainly widespread, but some places have it much worse than others.
It's interesting listening to the old time radio shows from WWII and right after for the rationing (during the war) and then the push to take in returning troops as boarders and get more houses built (right after).
I wonder what the prevalence of boarding houses was back then vs today? (I know in my grandma's diary she and several others had rooms in a house - I don't remember if it was owned by an older couple or a widow).
