The only thing that makes sense for people hp is Aura: a rapidly regenerating energy field that protects you from all but minor injuries, and even those heal pretty quickly, until depleted at which point you can take real damage that may kill or seriously wound you.
Nah, physical damage with a certain amount of avoidance and a stamina that, the higher level you get, the more supernatural or at least extraordinary (as in 3.5/PF, "Ex") it gets is fine. An "Ex" ability to keep going. See also falling from heights. After a while you are not human anymore and is FINE. This is why BTW I agree with those that advocate that higher level non-casters should have non-mundane abilities, I just disagree with timing and mechanics.
Back then, we had endless arguments on how a full HP character that is stabbed by a poisoned weapon and is affected by it, or even not affected, must have been grazed in the least.

4E was lacking in style and flare. When I read the phb I get bored to tears. Nothing less stylish, even the LBBs had some charm to them.

In contrast, I loved reading the 4e PHB from front to back. When I read the 4e PHB, it made me dream. It made me want to play. I actually like the art, the flavor text, and what was being communicated about the world through the play options. It's just different strokes for different folks, Shardstone. 🤷‍♂️

I agree with @Aldarc. I don't find 4e D&D to be lacking in style or flare. It makes me imagine how things would work out in play.

I have never read the 4e phb.

These two posts seem to be in tension with one another.

I can't tell whether @Shardstone is fist-pumping his personal, and one of the historically better, Own Goal or if this is some crazy level 4D Chess Uno Double Reverse making a caricature of the 4e detractor not having actually read much of the books (or at least not sincerely...or at least not absorbed them) but having ALLLLLL THE BIG OPINIONS on the game!

Flumoxed! You get both:

I am actually just mimicking people who hate 4E books. I consider the game particularly innovative and a great model for a new direction of Fantasy games, ala PF 2E, Lancer, Icon, and the MCDM RPG.

The best way to play 4E is with a mouse and keyboard.

Lol nice.

Also:

* Fighters are spellcasters in 4e (forget what the extreme differences in total build generates, how that references keyword tech, and what the actual play produces)!

* Martial Mind Control is so unrealistic...nothing like that happens ever IRL!

* Warlords shout hands back on (even though no D&D outside of Swords of Sharpness take hands off!) and inspirational replenishing of reserves, fortitude, purpose, ability to carry on is bunk (doesn't happen ever anywhere!)!

* You can't set things on fire in D&D 4e (forget Keyword Fire and rules on Targets and stunting and Say Yes!)!

* Player-authored Quests are not a thing (forget the actual text on the subject and the Say Yes appoach of the game)!

* Fail Forward is EZMode nonsense and that bunk will never become featured in future TTRPGs (lawl?)!

* Skill Challenges don't feature perpetual situation-state change (even though the book's instruction expressly demands them) and are just an exercise in fiction-irrelevant dice rolling where Fighters are doing push-ups to convince kings!

* Noncombat Conflict Resolution frameworks (Skill Challenges) that structures and organizes noncombat scene framing & resolution are just totally artifacts of gamey nonsense (pay no attention to Hit Points and Turn-Based Combat!)

* Forced Movement never happens in actual martial combat (where warriors constantly feint, circle, attack angles, and change levels to impose or compel their opposition to move/duck/sprawl to deal with the attack or feigned attack!)...its gamey nonsense!
