But we know that Packet 1 had two races that got a second pass and then one of those was dropped. So Packet 1 wasn't "basically unscathed."
Yes, he specifically mentioned the Dragonborn and Ardlings as the exceptions: the context was a comment when they switched to the more conservative Subclasses, making the point that more of the playtests were making it through than commenter thought.

Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised of it is basically what we saw in Packet 1 in the PHB.

The only problem is that the generally popular goblin doesn't have a lot of overlap with the official D&D goblin, in either looks or personality. I'd say the Pathfinder goblin comes closer. They're at least green, have the "ugly-cute little maniacs" vibe going. And both are a good distance from the widely popular Warcraft goblins.

If D&D wants to promote goblins to a higher status, they're probably going to have to cave to popular opinion a bit.
WotC moving the goblin family into the Feywild in recent years was their first step in that direction, IMO. I would bet that we see urban goblins in the coming years as well, which will get us the rest of the way.

I hope not. I'm not a big half-whatever partisan, but making people give up a feat to play as one would be wildly unpopular, and rightly so.
It's a situation with no obvious good solution. If you gate them behind a feat, that's both annoying and requires them to be stronger than other races to pay back the feat cost. But you can't let people mix and match features freely because they're balanced as an entire package, not as discrete elements. And neither of those addresses the issue of the whole half-race concept being highly troublesome as a classification, historically.

That's why we're kind of falling into the "pick one set of stats and describe them how you like". It's the least bad option. Personally, I'll be happier just playing an orc than a half-orc. I don't feel like anything important is being lost, though I see why some feel differently.

I assume the feat would get you something.

I.e.
Elf Heritage
*You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Dwarf Heritage
*You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.

Probably so, but it still limits people's options for the sake of what is often just a roleplaying choice.
