D&D (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Each day this week, Wizards of the Coast will be releasing a new live-streamed preview video based on the upcoming Player's Handbook. The first is entitled Everything You Need To Know and you can watch it live below (or, if you missed it, you should be able to watch it from the start afterwards). The video focuses on weapon mastery and character origins.

There will be new videos on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, focusing on the Fighter, the Paladin, and the Barbarian, with (presumably) more in the coming weeks.

I love how magic is very prevalent in the art. They showcase fantasy civilizations populated by magical races embracing magic as part of their structure and cultures. And it doesn't look like it is all magitech, which I appreciate.

Agreed! There were a few scenes that just screamed "Fantasy Town!" to me. I've also appreciated the wide variety of types of people. A gnome woman with a prosthetic, a paladin woman who looks like she is in her 50's, some BIG dudes. I also noted a lot of art that covered different worlds/groups. Saw Raistlin and Carmen, saw Bigby and pretty sure I saw Melf. Mordenkainen with a group of wizards.

All excellent stuff.

So with Origin feats, Epic Boon feats and mainly since some things that previously existed as class features (Fighting Styles for example) have migrated to be a feat and assuming the classes they came from will still get it, feats are not optional anymore, right?

Right, we knew that.

In the fiction, yes. But unless you can point to a sentence or paragraph specifically detailing those things, you will have players arguing with you and rage quitting games if you try to impose them.

Geeze, you mean if you slap a player with a penalty that was never discussed with them, out of the blue, and then threaten to either kill or ruin their character they get upset? /s

Now, hopefully I am misunderstanding you, and it is more that you are discussing during session 0. And at that point, it is all about the approach. I would ask what the contract was, and if the player insists they got the power without paying a long-term price, I might ask them "Okay, sounds like you cheated this devil out of their proper payment. How do you feel about them gunning for you as a mortal enemy, since you got the better of them?"

A lot of players are perfectly fine with a personalized villain, and it can be a ton of fun. You just can't approach it as "you need a list of penalties and you sold your soul, what did you expect it is a devil, now here's what happened."
