I don't know how you can call 3e a "very simple ruleset" - then again, I'm not sure that I agree with that description for 1e or 2e either, for that matter.
Simple in the idea of exception based design.

For example for 2 editions the Fighter's only feature was Accuracy go up faster. More attacks. Wizard was Accuracy go up faster. More spells
3rd added "Get a feat"
This is why so many could make OSR and 3e copycats so easily. Once you design the core rules. The classes and races were simple.

Therefore if you add anything to the base game, the change is big. Giving fighter Action Surge or Elves cantrips and spells in 1e-3e would be huge.

Whereas...

"2024 5e let's you have a feat at level 1! "
"Meh, I was doing that anyway"

I say they'll probably go out of print but be available on DMGuild as POD for those that want them
Maybe. But they haven't done that with other 5e products that have gone out of print (the original Starter Set, the original Tyranny of Dragons duology, Volo's, or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes). In fact Wizards themselves hasn't added anything at all to DM Guild in quite a while. (And at least one "legacy content" product has disappeared from searches there, the Elemental Evil Player's Companion - you have to go there directly now).

People have been predicting the imminent death of D&D for a decade now. I'm not too worried about it now. Plenty of people turn 12 every day and over the next year or two I think more people will switch over than you expect.

But hey, if you're happy throwing around unfounded doomsday scenarios for the best selling TTRPG ever have fun.
I feel like you're responding to a statement I didn't make.

It was just a guess on my part. Maybe keeping them in print or available at all might take away sales from the 2024 core books, only time will tell.

I believe the next edition will be released as a series of updates to our D&D Beyond assets. There may be a splatbook of some sort but I doubt we'll ever see a Players Handbook/Dungeon Masters Guide/Monster Manual set of three books ever again.
Ok do you have anything to go on for this, other than feels?
