How is starting a collection a red flag? That’s exactly what you do when you purchase physical minis and terrain, which is what PS is emulating.
Because if I buy the MM, I do not want to buy it all in digital mini form, or worse, buy random loot boxes for a chance to get a Minotaur etc.

Or get a chance to win Tasha’s wand of puppies….

I am very worried about loot box gambling, etc.

I wish they’d talk about the cost.

There's never really been any doubt that they would charge for the minis, has there? What would you want in this case?
There has been some doubt as we don't know how it's going to work.

Heck it could be cosmetic as there has been a second different mini of the Gold Dragon shown.

I'm sure they'll have some sort of storefront, and a "miniature box" where you can sort through your minis (animated or not) and use them on the tabletop as well as create copies so you could drop half a dozen orcs onto the map, etc. I'd hope you could buy individual minis or sets of minis for various games.

I think this could work well if there's a few things they hit:

  1. Free to play version with stock player character minis
  2. One time Paid player version with a robust and good looking character builder
  3. Player subscription to get access to an ever growing character customization library of features
  4. D&D tactics battles players can do by themselves with AI enemies or with a full team of players and a DM.
  5. DM subscription that gives access to all basic miniatures, or codes that come with monster supplements for monster minis.
I don't want to be paying micro transactions for all of the minis.

Talking about costs isn't exactly sexy, though.

Do you like having food to eat, and often do things that you don't necessarily love to make that happen?

So does Kobold Press, and everyone else who isn't independently wealthy.
Yeah. So they profit from WotC being there. And WotC also profits.

Of course there could be a world where D&D is only held up by small companies. But probably everyone would make less money and have less to eat than in the current situation. You might have seen my sadly I added. I do agree that a world where noone needs money for basic stuff would be preferable. But it is not how it currently works.
And Kobold Press and Wizards might not be fighting against each other as it looked last year. They might have both come to the conclusion that cooperating is better for both.
