When Do the 5E “Ride or Die” Folks Become Grogs Like The Rest of Us in “D&D Older Editions” And When Do We Get D&D 5E Flair for Posts?

I do particularly enjoy the thread in the main D&D forum titled "Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:". Because if there's one thing that epitomizes edition warring, it's arguing over the Ranger.

(I guess also the Warlord, but he got taken out back and shot after 4e, so....)

Anyway I'll be here with my popcorn and my giant "We're #4!" foam finger.
Hmmm, I really like the latest version of the Ranger. 🤷‍♀️

I suppose that regardless of if it’s “race as class” or “race and class” going to “race as cosmetic as you’re character’s name and gender” is still completely different from anything in the past 50 years of the game.
PHAT Sakk,
I read your earlier post where you said something similar. I was confused then and I am confused now. I have the new PHB and the new DMG and I have read through all of the PHB and parts of the DMG. Races are part of character creation and by selecting a race/species one gets various features, one's lifespan may differ, and so forth and so on. There is either one or two pages per race/species. What do you mean by "Race as cosmetic as you're [sic] character's name and gender?"

You got me thinking, "am I missing something here?" Or are you overstating things to make a point?

I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. But I think LL's rebuild of the martial classes to have maneuvers, as well as their warlock, savant, and psion, are absolutely top tier.
Is there a link or title you would suggest, TwoSix? I might buy it to check it out.

My understanding was that racial traits that affect actual gameplay were eliminated in the current edition.

I’ve been relocated to rural Ontario from the US for work (which is also why I no longer have a game; if anyone wants to run a game in Bruce County, please let me know, I schlepped three shelves of game books from NC to Canada in August and haven’t even touched a die in anger in two months), so there aren’t any FLGS for me to actually go through the PHB or purchase.

Even in 5E racial attributes were downplayed from previous ones, so there was already some of it, but from what I was told, you can basically apply any racial “package” from the original 5E game to any species. It’s no longer exclusive or anything.

Hell, I may be completely wrong, and if so, please let me know.

Howdy Phatt,

I sure hope you are able to get whatever books that you want soon...and I hope that you find a group to game with!

Whoever told you that about races did not give you correct information. So, apart from ability score bonuses being moved from race to background, races/species function the same. As we saw in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, there has been a move away from what might be called cultural race features like skills or proficiencies to straight-up species features. The text is also stripped of a lot of flavor and sample names. My hope is that flavor will return -- hopefully even amplified -- in future setting books, as I love that stuff. Naming charts are in the DMG but are not organized by species.

Rather than a table for age ranges for each race, longevity is ballparked for most of the species if it is close to human longevity. If it is significantly different -- like for gnomes, dwarves, elves, etc. -- that is mentioned in the text. All species except goliaths now have a speed of 30 ft. Goliaths have a speed of 35. More size range is given for various species. For example, humans or tieflings can now be Medium or Small.

Good luck! I am going to be taking a short trip to Canada in two weeks.
