"Pro rate" (for genre fiction, anyway) has been five cents a word for ... more than half a century, possibly closer to a whole one.
Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Motorsports photography, up here, wasn't any better. A full page picture, in a national motorcycle magazine, was a whole $125.00. I once lucked out and was the only pro photographer at a regional racing round that effectively turned out to be a national series practice. It paid my basis food and transportation costs for better than half a year.* The rest of the time I was pretty much in the hole. Now people wonder why I don't shoot the races anymore ;)

* Of shooting at the track.

Not really, no. In the early pulp era (1924) it was in the 1/2¢ to 1¢/word neighborhood. And as of Sept 2019 the pro rate hit 8¢/word.
