And of course communication is two-way. My reaction to "Just talk to your players" has been "If your experience has been 'just talk to people' is, on the whole, an easy thing to make work, you've had a far different set of experiences in life than I have." People are often resistant to expressing themselves for any number of reasons, some legitimately come by, and convincing them they should is a talent not everyone possesses. Among other things, when someone is hesitant or resistant to express how they feel about something, it can be difficult to pursue it without effectively pressuring them.

Talk to the folks in your gaming group, and listen to what they have to say. And when they tell you that something isn't working well, or making them uncomfortable, or having a negative impact, believe them. Then do better.

Why is #1 a no-brainer, and #2 so controversial?

The stake are higher in terms of one ego and insecurities?

Close, long-term relationships evolve and it can be hard to evolve with them. The hurts along the way can lead some people to react to what should be an uncontroversial and obvious truism based on very specific and personal experiences and feelings. And its that reaction that likely let to a lot of those hurts.
