It’s not just now. I’ve heard stuff like that all my life. “Snitches get stitches” and all that. There’s a million variations. “Know an undocumented immigrant, no you don’t.” Don’t talk to cops. Etc.
Back in the Depression when a farmer was evicted and his farm auctioned off, the other farmer in the community would fill the auction and muscle out anyone else. They’d refuse to bid and quiet anyone other than the original owner from bidding. Ensuring the owner got to buy back his farm for pennies on the dollar.
There’s a long history of poor and working-class people sticking together in the US. They just don’t teach any of it in school.
