I read something in my social media feed (not here) last week, and it's still stuck in my brain.

It’s not just now. I’ve heard stuff like that all my life. “Snitches get stitches” and all that. There’s a million variations. “Know an undocumented immigrant, no you don’t.” Don’t talk to cops. Etc.

Back in the Depression when a farmer was evicted and his farm auctioned off, the other farmers in the community would fill the auction and muscle out anyone else. They’d refuse to bid and quiet anyone other than the original owner from bidding. Ensuring the owner got to buy back his farm for pennies on the dollar.

There’s a long history of poor and working-class people sticking together in the US. They just don’t teach any of it in school.

Same here in Australia. Nowadays you can buy US sweets at US themed sweet stores, and even in some regular supermarkets.

And yet the most soda-drinking country in the whole damn world can't manage to stock Irn-Bru anywhere within an hour of me... <glares at America>
(And I am not about to spend $30-40 plus shipping to order a six-pack of soda off the internet.)

Maybe I'm a little out if touch here, but I always thought "snitches get stitches" was less Robin-hood-esque and "don't mess with the mafia". Not so much a rally cry of fighting the oppressors as much as "meet the new boss, same as the old boss".

Oh I know. It was the specificity of the things being stolen ("food and medicine") that really stuck with me.
