Additionally, many of the creatures have gotten more flavourful with more developed themes.

The 2 lizardfolk in the book are elementals because they have been influenced by elemental earth. Their entry starts by saying most are humanoid but then gives us 2 more flavourful stat blocks than we got before.
But many have become less flavourful by having their entries removed altogether. I don't like that my MM doesn't include dwarves, orcs, goliaths, humans, etc.

As I argued previously, similar to lizard folk, all playable species should have a few specific examples in the MM. And I would just keep the type as humanoid, while setting the alignment to "any."

Poor duergar, reduced to a substitution entry as spies? I guess mechanically hiding stuff is to represent their psionic invisibility?

I don't think this is your intention, and I have said many times, I think the people making this argument have good intentions, think they are making the world better, and believe in what they are doing. When the Satanic Panic happened my D&D books were taken away. I didn't blame my parents. They were trying to protect me from something they thought was a harmful influence. They were still good people. So I can juggle the idea that the development of this mindset is a bad idea, that is stifling creativity, while also understanding that just because someone believes in an idea I think is bad, it doesn't make them bad. Good people can believe in bad ideas (our understanding of things is so far from perfect, most people believe in faulty ideas in some part of their life, including myself I am sure).
If WotC cared about my Christian beliefs, I would tell them to remove every reference to Demon, Devil, Yugoloth, etc as I find their inclusion appalling, especially such things as the Warlock Fiendish patron where you are "making a deal with the devil". And that is not a joke.

But they won't, and I'll just deal with it.

That is one reason why TSR made the shift in 2nd-edition with Tanar'ri. I don't know WotC eventually moved backwards.

Demons are popular. Just have to look over at GW to see that.

Doesn't mean I have to use them in my games or buy books that feature them prominently. It was actually the reason I did not buy the 1E PHB & DMG until the got they revised Easley covers and why I will never purchase Descent into Avernus or Out of the Abyss.
