D&D (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

It isn’t a minor grievance for those of us who really are into Forgotten Realms lore AND who spend our money to buy these books.

You know, in JJ Abrams' 2013 movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness, at one point they introduce the ability to use transporters across interstellar distances... a violation of canon so large that it obviates the core conceit of the entire property, removing the need for a Starfleet at all.

By comparison, a change in a group of knights that are rarely mentioned in the FR canon... does not seem to be a major issue. The FR as a whole is not violated, is it? Does the Sword Coast sink into the sea if they change the nature of these knights, or something?

There is a point where we have to pick our battles, just as a practical thing, or we give ourselves aneurisms.

I'm starting to think a lot of media engagement on the internet is based on negativity. I don't know if anyone has looked into this, but the article linked in the opening post makes me think this is a possibility.

Starting to think that lol. Figured it out about 5 minutes after I heard about Twitter.

Focusing on the negative is part of human nature. We love to complain!

The internet enables us to amplify the signal, create echo chambers, and cause all sorts of trouble with our negativity way easier and faster than any other medium of communication.

Forgotten Realms was always the lame, generic fantasy realm, so I can't bring myself to care. If WotC wants my attention, they can bring back Dark Sun.

It isn't just that. There's a simple logic to it.

If we like what is happening, we don't need anyone to change anything. There is no particular need to speak on the matter.

If we don't like what is happening, then at minimum we have to let someone know if we want to see any change. There is an incentive to speak.

This. Focusing on the positive is going to usually be focused on creativity, ideation, and theory. "Oh wow Elminster seems to get around, I wonder if he has any mystery kids - wait, what if Drizz't is distantly related to Elminster!?"

Otherwise you're just repeating the content.

WotC asked for feedback. It's not INTERNET RAGE to give them that feedback.

This is literally a question WotC has provoked, intentionally, to see if something works. Telling them it doesn't work like that is valid, useful, and, indeed, part of what we should be doing as a community.

If something sucks, we can say it sucks. Let people have their opinions on the thing people were asked their opinions on.

And, IMO, it does suck. It's not what I want out of a purple dragon knight any more than "brutal, fiend-worshipping madmen" is what out I want out of a kender. Yeah, you probably can justify it in the lore, if you control the lore, but it's more about missing the opportunity for a cool kind of character that's already right there. Just, frickin', do the cool thing that it already is.

Sorry if that opinion hurts the feelings of a WotC designer or whatever, but they can also pick their battles, and they don't really have to pick this one.
