It isn’t a minor grievance for those of us who really are into Forgotten Realms lore AND who spend our money to buy these books.
You know, in JJ Abrams' 2013 movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness, at one point they introduce the ability to use transporters across interstellar distances... a violation of canon so large that it obviates the core conceit of the entire property, removing the need for a Starfleet at all.
By comparison, a change in a group of knights that are rarely mentioned in the FR canon... does not seem to be a major issue. The FR as a whole is not violated, is it? Does the Sword Coast sink into the sea if they change the nature of these knights, or something?
There is a point where we have to pick our battles, just as a practical thing, or we give ourselves aneurisms.
