D&D 5E I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

Eh, the only people I've seen clamoring for a total break from 5e and a totally different edition to be produced... aren't fans of D&D 5e.
You don't think the small changes in design, lore usage and style WotC has been making couldn't benefit from further development currently hampered by their "backwards compatibility" initiative?

But that's not the product fans want... I don't think a fan wants those changes totally divorced from the D&D 5th editiion rules. They have a rules system they are a fan of, what they want is for it to be expanded, tweaked, and revised with different options but not for the rules foundation to be ripped out and replaced. I feel like you're kind of missing the point of being a fan of the 5e rules.

Do they want that? Has adoption of 5.5 over its predecessor been so enthusiastic that we can count on that opinion?

This is an unnecessary binary. I'm assuming a lot of feedback was mixed, and that since they decided they didn't have time to experiment more, they dropped their more experimental concepts. It's really harmful to discussion to just reduce things to overly shallow black and white statements.
But that is basically how they operated the surveys: sparks joy or doesn't spark joy. And ultimately that led to what I would consider a stronger move forward.

I don't think the designers wanted to design a new game, I think the driver for a new edition was mostly financial and selling new game material, which doesn't happen without a new "Players Handbook".
And I wouldn’t rule out the social pressure of expectations they would do something to recognize the 50th anniversary.
