(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Wow. That's a pretty shocking success against the Sort-of Dracolich. It helped that I rolled like absolute crap, and you DID spend some serious resources, so I'm not going to cry foul. If you're wondering how he got a few extra shots in there, well, it's because of Legendary Actions. I decided it best not to backtrack, so I tired to do things that wouldn't change anything (for example, if this were a F2F version of the fight, it might have knocked Merrick or Torhak back with the tail BEFORE they had a chance to do a 2nd Attack, or maybe would have broken free to avoid the Advantage, or some other small-detail changes). But I'm only a little disappointed that it seemed a little anticlimactic for such a big reveal fight.

Good Job, Team Caves!

The fight might be over, but it depends on two things: 1) Did Merrick get tossed in the Fighting Pit with an enraged fighting bug? (He'll probably make the save); 2) Can you stop the Kobolds from turning on you in the hopes that they'll avoid the wrath of their "master"? (If this isn't the "True" Dragon, that doesn't mean that there isn't one, does it? Does it?)

Two questions: is the 12 damage after you halved it? Merrick was ‘raging’

2nd question: can I purposefully fail my save? I think I’d rather fight a bug than take a bunch of poison damage

Edit: I never realized that I’m supposed to be adding +2 to all my damage when I rage. I will have to try to remember for next time!!

No, no - it was 12 Bludgeioning. So you take 6 damage. Out of curiosity, how are you still at 2/3 Rages remaining? You used it at the switchback, got it back short resting, used it again to use STR in place of CHA for some Charisma Skills, and used it in the fight. The charisma and the fight were not 10 minutes apart (not the FIRST time you rolled Intimidate, back at the Cave entrance, at any rate).

Haw! I'm not sure that you could make that calculation ahead of time, otherwise, I think you can willingly fail saves, yeah. But in this case, you'd have had no way of knowing that the Dragon would drop, far or less give off a cloud when it did.

No wonder you weren't even close to the other two in damage-dealing. Not that you can factor crits, smites, hunter's mark, dread ambusher, etc etc and expect to keep up.

I keep having to remind myself: Team Cave's success in that encounter does not mean that the threats have been underclocked. Besides, much like Dog Days, it's not going to be easy to get rests. Alpha Striking is not advised. (Though I get why it was done here - it actually COULD have done a breath weapon, so it was worth spending the resources to save on healing resources in the least, or avoid death at worst).

I hadn’t updated my character sheet in a while. I only just now updated my hp from the last round. I kind of lost track of the time with social checks so I think I only have one left, which is what I should have now on my updated sheet but let me know if I have none left. I also misread how rages refresh. It’s all on a long rest but only one on a short rest. I thought I got them all back on a short.

Okay, in which case I just rolled and succeeded the strength and failed the con save. Merrick is hurting.

Edit: just updated my HP

Yeah, a Paladin and Ranger are a powerful duo for damage

Well, I (for one) do not think that the encounter was underclocked. Just as a reminder- I used both my best abilities (Dao's Crush), two of my three remaining spell slots (for smites), all my remaining healing (to get rid of poisoned condition) ... we also got ridiculously lucky (on the first round) .... and the thing took out half my hit points just by dying. In other words, if it had ever connected with me, it would have killed me when it died (if it didn't before). So I'm pretty pretty pretty happy that we went all out and also got some luck!

That said, absent a long rest at some point, I am going to be hurting in combat. I didn't optimize TWF because I like my fluff (theoretically, I should be wielding at least one vex weapon, and if I was a weapon juggler I'd add an additional higher die weapon, but I can't stomach the fluff for "juggling weapons" .... just won't do it). So Shamal, even if he rolls well for combat, which he doesn't (he's a dancer, not a fighter, dammit Jim!) will always be on the lower end of damage output most of the time.

Agreed. I am glad that it didn't feel anticlimactic. It was quick, but it needed to be quick, or no one would have survived.

I honestly can't believe that no kobolds died. When I first realized what would happen when Urbone gave you the idol, I imagined all the poor kobolds screaming and being stomped on for their "mistake" of helping you. But they managed to clear out before it managed to get out of the transporter (nothing a Kobold is better at than fleeing) - and the "Dracolich" is a Huge creature when the transporter is a Large object; It had to squeeze out.

Anyway, I was amazed at how well you did, but yeah - you burned a LOT of resources. You'll have to play it safe for a bit.

Yeah, I’m feeling a bit naked right now, resource-wise.

The worse part is I took 31 damage in damage that Merrick isn’t resistant to so I didn’t really get to take advantage of my ability to tank.
