D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I just want tools to support various methods of play, varying levels of magic, and a real toolset of a game. Not particularly bothered how other folks choose to run their game, just let me run mine the way I desire.

Yeah, the draconians are tied up into such a shocking genocidal betrayal that I really don't want a player's PC to be in that position. I don't even want them to be draconian-adjacent to it.

I do think, in the right campaign, it could be really interesting.

Where the DM intends to explore the whole concept of a manufactured slave race born out of one of the biggest betrayals of the setting.

But the whole point would be leaning into the concept, where likely multiple (or better yet, all) PCs are draconians or draconian adjacent. But that's a special, different, case, with full DM and player buy in.

Which system do you use that’s like this now?

There seem to be a few solid toolbox systems now (GURPS, savage worlds, cypher, fate, etc ), I think your preference is well served.

Personally I’m excited by the up coming new edition for cypher to fill this niche for me.

None, unfortunately. OSR’s that way, but several of my players only want 5e, so I tend to be stuck in that lane. BRP’s another good one I’d like to explore - I think Dragonbane specifically, as it’s not super crunchy peanut butter but seems easy to convert both BRP and OSR stuff to.

I search out rules variants in 3rd party content for 5e at almost every opportunity, and as a result my players get extra content too 😄

I’m also extremely permissive as a GM, but it’s important to remember that GM permissiveness goes hand-in-hand with player responsibility.
Exactly this. If a player treats their character like some sort of absolute, with no concern for how it impacts other players, the GM, or the campaign, then they've essentially abdicated the social contract.

Mythras would be my go-to based on the requirements described. By default, it leans towards a lower-powered starting point, but I was able to turn a few dials, throw a few more points at starting characters and found the PCs in my Dark Sun game all felt appropriately tough and grizzled, and able to take on the sorts of threats you'd expect in the setting.

I’ve tried to read Mythras several times because I know it’s supposed to be great, but for some reason I find the text a slog every time.

To add to my previous comment on Mythras and because you've expressed an interest in BRP: although the idea of emulating D&D rules feels to me like it's missing the point, a lot of people do want to directly emulate D&D, and Mythras Classic Fantasy is designed for just this.

Edit: just saw your response on Mythras. Fair enough then.

I’m totally open to learning it! The text just seems bland and uninspiring every time (unfortunately I have the same issue with WWN). Maybe I have to be in the right headspace.

Half-Dragons, Dragonborn, Dracha, Draconians and what they are called all serve the same role - play a dragon-themed being that's compatible for play. I don't think most players would be worried much if you can play one or the other, but if you can't play anything like that at all, it's definitely a thematic loss in choices that will bother some players.
What I was pointing out is that is not what Draconians were intended to be. Yes, they became playable later, but they were not put in Dragonlance so that players could play dragon-men. They were a replacement for orcs!
