Spoilers Star Trek Academy [spoiler thread]

Makes you wonder, with that big a time skip, is there any value to it being a Star Trek story beyond name recognition?
The species and politics have changed with every series, so that's not telling. So long as the ethos is the same, yes, there's value to it.
So, first episode watched! I enjoyed hearing some traditional Trek music in the opening.
Darker than I expected (in a good way—I was worried it would be very much a kids’ show). A mix of trad-Trek vibes with Disco-Trek technology (well, mainly the little floaty worker robots, hologram comms, and those instantaneous transporters they have in the Discovery+ era).
What mainly didn’t work were the comic relief characters. The hologram cadet was more annoying than funny, and comedically-angry first officer alien was just grating.
But other than that…. I liked it! The ship’s bridge was more TOS upgrade than Disco, and they’ve realised they need to turn the lights on. The bridge officers aren’t the cadets, and they all talk like Starfleet bridge officers saying all the right things about clearing all moorings and shield percentages and auxiliary power and stuff. The bridge felt like a trad-Trek bridge not just in looks (albeit more shiny and futuristic than TOS or TNG era) but in the way it works, the familiar language the crew use, all that stuff. The crew have the red-blue-yellow uniform colours back! (Not the cadets though, they all have boring grey). Some of the other areas of the ship felt less like a starship and more like a futuristic casino lobby though. The ship itself is a bit odd looking with 'wing' shaped warp nacelles, but at least the nacelles are attached to the ship this time.
After quite a long set-up with tragic backstories (this is bit is quite dark... and Starfleet using shock collars on prisoners? Huh?), once the episode moves to the ship, it lightens in tone considerably and becomes a fairly typical Trek-style episode where the ship is attacked and various groups have to do different things to save the day. The bridge crew are doing their thing, a bunch of cadets are trying to save the angry first officer's life in sickbay, and a third group are having to do an engineering solution to the attack, including a spacewalk.
Holly Hunter makes a good captain, although she’s a little cavalier. She doesn't feel so much 'in command' as everybody's cool aunt.
Nice to see San Francisco Starfleet HQ at the end. Putting it there grounds the show a bit and adds to that trad-Trek feel. I wonder how much of the show will be set there, and how much on the Athena?

Im not real up on star trek lore. Does this mean a thousand years from now? or a thousand years in the future from regular Star Trek?

Dunno, man. Watch it and decide for yourself! I think this felt like Star Trek (much more than Discovery did) but I guess each of us has to answer that question for ourselves.

Fully set in the Academy in San Francisco, it’s mainly teen drama, arguments about dorm allocations, amusing events during class, some romance angst all against a backdrop of a negotiation at the Academy with the president of Betazed about rejoining the Fenderation.
It was very lightweight.
But Betazed is joining the Federation (thanks to our main cadet) and the new Federation HQ will now be on Betazed instead of Earth (the Academy isn't moving though).
