So after a couple of days thought.

It’s Harry Potter in space but with 20-yr olds and if Harry didn’t want to be there.

It doesn’t feel like Discovery at all.

It’s my primary character trait. After 51 years (27 right here on ENW) it ain’t gonna change anytime soon!
I wasn't asking you to!

Is that a good thing? I liked Discovery and thought it was very Star Trek. I know a lot of people don't share that opinion, though.

I say this as a fan of Discovery, but the main thing I found sometimes challenging was how breathless Disco could be. We have to shoot this exposition sequence with spinning lights and camera, this character has to have a emotional crisis while we figure out how we're solving this week's plot and then jump into a fist fight with the villain and deliver a monologue about Starfleet ideals ... gasp

And there are some glimmers of that, but in general, this show is a lot calmer. We got the Doctor singing opera, I'd missed seeing our characters indulge in art.

I love how snarky you are!

I'm following along in this thread to enjoy the show vicariously since I can't watch it myself yet. I've done that with a number of others as well. Y'all know I don't care about spoilers. My children are always complaining about how I like to spoil things for myself. LOL.
Are you me? Im watching thread for same reason:) my kids at least know i like spoilers, so they watch the movies/ shows i can't and let me know what happens :)

I don't subscribe to Paramount+ so I can't watch this yet. Hoping it will be available on our free TVNZ On Demand service like Discovery and Strange New Worlds are (although I note those are down to the most recent seasons of each only, so I guess if I wanted to go back and watch them from the beginning, I'd have to subscribe to Paramount+ anyway ...).
Can't?

Is there something preventing you from subscribing to Paramount+?

Pleasantly surprised. Not hugely so, but my annoyance only veered to mild plus level, while my enjoyment was solidly moderate (moderate > mild).

There were a few standout annoying things. The hologram character. Some bad CGI (the Thing alien looked really bad, like 2005 CGI. Some of the other aliens just looked unrealistic. The brother Betazed acting overly 20th century American bro-ish. Caleb's arms are, well, buddy you need to chill a bit in the gym.

But overall I found myself invested and like the overall vibe more than I thought I would. As cinema--acting, story, etc--it was mediocre. But mediocre cinema in a Star Trek venue = pretty entertaining. It also will likely improve as it finds its groove.

The biggest thing I saw on the webs that people are upset about (and this seems a legitimate criticism).....why are the Betazoids using sign language. They are....literally telepathic (not to be confused with Deanna Troi's emphatic nature for being a half-betazoid.) They can literally talk in each others minds!

My head cannon to account for this:

1) Many betazoids speak so much in their heads (especially now with their isolation), that they haven't really developed good speech. So they just don't talk, sign language is the best they have for external communication.

2) The daughter's on a limiter for her telephatic abilities, so perhaps she cannot speak telepathically. So the sign language while they are walking is a curtosy to her.

But yeah on the surface it does seem really strange, and clearly not established before with the betazoids we have seen on previous series.
